Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

This position is responsible for supporting elementary students who are eligible for English Learner supports.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

Collaborate with classroom teachers administrators curriculum developers parents and students to ensure academic success for English Learners.
Work to ensure that classroom environments foster English language acquisition enhance academic progress and build students self-esteem.
Communicate with classroom teachers regularly and participate on building equity and leadership teams and/or committees.
Provide classroom teachers and support staff with materials and appropriate strategies to use with ELL students.
Organize and support state-required testing.
Maintain files with required paperwork for each student in the ELL program.
Provide District ELL office with updated student information as requested.
Complete and distribute all necessary ELL forms.
Participate on the guidance team or multidisciplinary team when a student in the ELL program is discussed.
Collaboratively support ELL students with special needs.
Involve parents in school events share information about translators/interpreters advocate for second language learner parents/students.
Demonstrate effective teaching practices in small group or whole group instruction.
Recognize individual student learning needs and remain responsive and flexible in strategies to address those needs.
Foster and manage a safe additive learning environment through creating an environment of respect and rapport managing classroom procedures student behavior and organizing a safe physical space for student learning.
Use and interpret multiple student data elements to modify instruction and improve student learning.
Design or collaborate on design of student assessments use assessment in instruction and maintain accurate student records.
Communicate and collaborate with parents and the school community through effective and ongoing communication.
Participate in a professional community grow and develop professionally and demonstrate professionalism.
Attend or participate in all required staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary by the District and/or building principal in order to accomplish the objectives of the position and for professional development.
Participate in site-based decision-making processes.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports directly to and is supervised by the Supervisor of Programs for Multilingual Learners.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):

Required:
Possess or qualify for immediate issuance of a valid Washington State teaching certificate with an endorsement in ELL or bilingual education.
Experience conferencing with parents and students regarding individual progress and program planning.
Experience working with other staff members to accomplish common goals and to develop appropriate instructional strategies.


Preferred:
Bilingualism/ Multilingualism is valued in the department.
Multiple endorsements areas are a benefit in this position.
Experience classroom teaching and coaching teachers is preferred.
Preference will be given to candidates with an extensive knowledge in planning and delivering academic literacy instruction in the target language and with experience in Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD) and Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP).

SKILLS (position requirements at entry):


Ability to teach basic computer usage to students and other staff ability to use a computer to maintain program records as well as to communicate with staff and parents.
Ability and skills necessary to individualize instruction. Commitment and ability to work with a full range of students including gifted mainstreamed special education English learners and students from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
Ability to develop students technology literacy.
Ability to work in a collaborative or team approach.
Ability to communicate effectively professionally collaboratively and positively with students parents and colleagues orally and in writing.
Ability to work with students in multi-aged groups.
Ability to use varied assessments including performance tasks portfolios and student self-assessment.
Attends ongoing professional development activities such as college course work professional associations workshops and in-service opportunities.
Ability to perform all duties in accordance with applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements.
Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Positions in this class typically require: stooping kneeling crouching reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting finger dexterity grasping talking hearing seeing and repetitive motions. This position may be exposed to prolonged exposure to visual display terminals as required.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts odors chemicals extreme temperatures inadequate lighting workspace restrictions and intense noises.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This position is 1.0 FTE (0.6 FTE at Clyde Hill and 0.4 FTE at Spiritridge Elementary Schools)

$72270 to $135542 annual salary (based on the negotiated collective bargaining agreementsalary schedule). Certificated staff work the school year contract with placement on the District and BEA bargaining agreement salary schedule. Placement on the schedule is determined by training and experience.

Medical dental vision long-term disability and life-insurance eligibility is based upon .45 FTE. Retirement provided through Washington State Department of Retirement Systems.
