JOB TITLE: Principal on Special Assignment Middle School

REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent of School Leadership

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt

PAY GRADE: CA 5

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Principal on Special Assignment leads the assigned school with determination integrity and purpose to foster a sense of urgency and a relentless pursuit of high academic student achievement serves as a catalyst for positive change through demonstrated skill strength and commitment develops and communicates a clear vision to dramatically improve student learning by actively engaging staff parents and students and promotes relevant and meaningful instruction supporting ongoing teacher development and enhancing the overall school culture to create an environment where all students can succeed.

The Principal on Special Assignment must act with integrity support organizational goals demonstrate the ability to inspire grow and motivate others utilize feedback drive for results and commit to championing the needs of the students employees and overall District.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Masters degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas Mid-Management Principal or Superintendent Certification
  • Valid Texas Teaching Certificate
  • Valid T-TESS Certification (Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System)
  • Valid ILD or AEL Certification
  • Five (5) years of successful experience as a campus administrator demonstrating turnaround leadership and academic gains across diverse student populations

Preferred:

  • Five (5) years of successful experience as a campus principal demonstrating turnaround leadership and academic gains across diverse student populations

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Proven success in school turnaround leadership

  • Ability to identify and address root causes of underperformance
  • Knowledge of curriculum instruction and instructional leadership practices
  • Ability to analyze and apply student and campus data for improvement
  • Strong communication collaboration and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage and lead school staff toward accountability and results
  • Knowledge of federal state and local laws and compliance requirements
  • Experience working in diverse and high-needs school environments
  • Strong interpersonal coaching and team-building skills: ability to build a collaborative culture grounded in equity and shared purpose
  • Demonstrated sense of urgency and a relentless focus on improving academic outcomes
  • Reflective and self-aware leadership style with adaptability to a diverse communication and work preferences.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills: proactive and solutions-oriented leadership.
  • Systems-thinking mindset with ability to plan strategically and anticipate impact of decisions
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Special Education programs compliance requirements and instructional supports.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Instructional and Strategic Leadership

  • Create and sustain a culture of achievement respect and urgency for high academic performance.
  • Analyze student and school data to identify challenges and lead school-wide improvement strategies.
  • Design and implement systems for continuous instructional improvement and innovation.
  • Provide instructional leadership resources and professional learning aligned to student needs.
  • Establish and communicate expectations for staff performance instructional quality and student behavior.
  • Monitor curriculum implementation and involve students and community members when appropriate.
  • Facilitate campus performance planning in collaboration with staff parents and the community.
  • Apply research-based strategies to guide school transformation and student learning outcomes.

Talent and Personnel Management

  • Recruit select and recommend highly effective staff members.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and feedback to support professional growth.
  • Observe employee performance conduct evaluations and hold staff accountable to district expectations.
  • Make recommendations on personnel placement retention promotion and dismissal.
  • Model professional behavior and set clear expectations for collaboration and communication.
  • Confer with staff on professional growth goals and support development plans.
  • Assist in recruiting and supporting teacher candidates.

Organizational Culture and School Climate

  • Build and maintain a positive school culture that promotes collaboration and student success.
  • Establish coalitions to support change efforts and increase staff ownership of results.
  • Develop and implement student management systems that promote equity and enhance school climate.
  • Recognize and support the contributions and needs of all students and staff.
  • Promote multicultural awareness equity and inclusiveness in all school interactions.
  • Foster two-way communication among students staff families and the community.
  • Recognize excellence and achievement among staff and students.
  • Resolve conflicts effectively and support staff morale.

Operations and Compliance

  • Identify and address inefficiencies in campus operations and instructional practices.
  • Ensure compliance with district policies state and federal laws and accountability standards.
  • Review and approve accurate PEIMS data for submission.
  • Develop manage and monitor budgets aligned to campus needs and district expectations.
  • Maintain fiscal control and accurate reporting of campus expenditures.
  • Supervise and maintain safe clean and orderly campus facilities.
  • Ensure appropriate and equitable implementation of school rules and discipline.
  • Collaborate with assistant principals to coordinate student activities and school programs.
  • Testify in court proceedings as needed.

Community Engagement and Public Relations

  • Develop and implement systems to inform and engage the community in school goals and progress.
  • Articulate the campus and district mission to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Cultivate partnerships with families businesses and community organizations to support school success.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information.
  • Serve as an advocate and spokesperson for the district in school improvement efforts.

Other Duties

  • Report to work daily and fulfill responsibilities reliably and professionally.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of district goals.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned campus personnel including assistant principals instructional staff counselors and support staff. Responsible for the overall leadership direction and outcomes of assigned campuses or projects.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility standing prolonged sitting some lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling. This position will also require both traveling within the district and state wide. Mental demands: Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to interpret a variety of data; ability to interpret TEC and policy; ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory ability to be effective in both oral and written communication; ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
