The Department of Architecture Design and Media Technology has as its goal the development of an innovative cluster of engineering-based environments for education and research which integrate creativity engineering and technology within the disciplines of architecture urban design industrial design digital design and interactive media. The department is a leading research and educational environment in Denmark that addresses the challenge of the interplay between creativity and technology and develops new areas in research and education directed towards the end-user.

The research field of architecture at Aalborg University is characterized by a diverse and interdisciplinary research environment that integrates and holistically addresses the interrelation of architecture and engineering with the overall purpose of strengthening the quality of the built environment along with the quality of human and non-human life. The interdisciplinary approach is fundamental to research education and practice striving to fully integrate engineering and architectural methodologies.
To assist candidates establishing a research team at CREATE in sustainable architecture and digital technologies applicants we offer a start package allowing the applicant to hire two junior researchers for the first year and to support for applying for external funding for a continuation of these positions beyond the first year.

Your work tasks
In recent years artificial intelligence (AI) machine learning and computation have emerged as powerful digital technologies for creatively generating new design ideas and rapidly advancing formgiving methods within the architectural domain. These technologies enable quick design evaluations informing design choices and decision-making process in building design. Simultaneously the increased attention to green transitions and sustainability agendas shapes contemporary architectural debates raising complex environmental and urgent ethical issues as well as questioning the role and responsibility of future architects. We are seeking a candidate engaged in cutting-edge research within one or more of these areas. We are looking for a candidate capable of challenging the boundaries of current design practices and with the skillset to help grow and develop our interdisciplinary architectural research environment. We are looking for a colleague interested in exploring the accelerating influence of digital technologies including AI on the green transition of the built environment with a focus on applied and/or speculative approaches. The candidate must explore novel methods for integrating knowledge across architecture and engineering and engage cultural social and aesthetic aspects of architecture as well as intersections with climate change and planetary boundaries.
The applicant is an experienced researcher with a strong academic background in architecture who has published within the field of architecture focusing on digital technologies such as artificial intelligence computation and machine learning and their application in architectural design processes. Additionally we also value a candidate able to address historical philosophical and theoretical questions related to these digital technologies architecture and sustainability challenges. Research themes could include but are not limited to any of the following: ecology sustainability circular design sustainable architecture digital-driven design generative design building performance optimization digital design methods (e.g. predictive modeling multi-agent systems and algorithmic techniques for architectural design) digital design epistemologies and studies on architecture computation and artificial intelligence.
The applicant must have a strong theoretical and methodological foundation within architecture and have relevant experience within the field of digital technologies. Emphasis is on a profile with a holistic and integrated multidisciplinary approach to architecture including being able to use research-based knowledge in teaching research and knowledge dissemination. Further it is expected that the applicant holds a PhD degree is part of international research networks and demonstrate experience with PhD supervision academic writing fundraising and managing research projects.
The applicant will be part of an ambitious research and teaching environment and it is expected that the candidate will be a leading figure in the further development of the section of Architecture and Urban Design - and in particular in the continuous building up of the architecture research field at the department. Thus we expect that the applicant will actively participate in the daily life at the department and actively contribute to the knowledge production through publications externally funded research projects networking etc. Finally the position will contain teaching obligations to teach in programs related to the architecture study program.
Your Competencies
The successful applicant can demonstrate a documented high level of original scientific production at an international level including proven further development of the research area in question. An assessment of the candidates undertaking of research management and/or other possible management functions will also be taken into addition the applicant is expected to have the qualifications required for undertaking teaching responsibilities. Special contributions to and development of educational and teaching related areas will be considered in the overall assessment.

Qualification requirements
Applicants must be able to document a high degree of original academic production at an international level and experience from teaching at different levels. Including tests/exams course/study programme management as well as contributions to the development of teaching activities and teaching material.
Emphasis is placed on the extent to which the applicant has developed the academic discipline from a research and teaching perspective.
Emphasis may moreover be placed on the applicants ability to carry out and develop research-based public-sector consultancy. Also emphasis will be placed on an assessment of the applicants ability to perform research and teaching management tasks and possibly fulfil other functions for example in relation to the universitys external cooperation.
Emphasis will also be placed on the applicants ability to undertake pedagogical supervision supervision and academic assessment work.
Working at Aalborg University
Located on the harbor front in central Aalborg the Department of Architecture Design and Media Technology is situated few minutes away from the medieval city center with cultural and architectural heritage environments. Next door to concert venues and museums (the last building to be drawn by legendary Danish architect Jrn Utzon) are cafs and entertainment districts. CREATE (the local name for the Universitys down-town campus) sits just at the center of the action. However the beautiful fjord is on the key side and the attractive green landscapes of the countryside are few minutes away. The airport with direct connections to Amsterdam and beyond and the train station are also within very short distances of the city center campus.
Working in Denmark
Denmark has a well-developed educational system universal healthcare a rich cultural life excellent childcare and infrastructure and one of the highest standards of living in the world. Aalborg is a booming city converted from former shipyard and factory production to a regional knowledge- and culture hub. Sitting on top of Denmark the beautiful maritime coastal villages and beaches on both the east and west coast of the peninsula of Jutland are all within commuting or daytrip distance.
Danish Language Expectations
At Aalborg University Danish and English is used as equal languages and thus Danish language skills are not required at the time of appointment. However as a professor you are expected to teach supervise and/or assess in Danish within 25 years of your start date. Aalborg University supports this through free targeted Danish coursestypically offered on campus and during working hours.
