Job Description
1.0 FTE Grade 3/4 Teacher
South Canoe Elementary School
This is a temporary assignment effective September 1 2025 to December 31 2025 or return of teacher to full contractual FTE whichever comes first. This assignment will decrease to 0.200 FTE upon return of teacher.
South Canoe is an Outdoor Learning Program and requires teachers to utilize research-based best practices interventions programs and strategies to implement BC curriculum in an outdoor setting for the purpose of providing an appropriate educational program for students; This includes but is not limited to ensuring the safety of all children during activities such as forest play hiking regular off-sites (field trips) and land-based learning activities.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Arts or Education (Elementary);
- Valid BC teaching certificate and current membership in the Teacher Regulation Branch;
Certification training and/or experience in school-based outdoor education would be an asset;
Teachers applying should possess the following attributes:
- Passion for and willingness to engage in an Outdoor Learning Program model of education .
- A keen interest in planning and implementing an engaging safe and effective outdoor education program;
- Knowledge and experience of place-based experiential and inquiry-based learning approaches;
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and participation in school-wide focus on literacy and numeracy instruction;
- Familiarity with and willingness to implement Heggerty and UFLI programs;
- Model and teach outdoor skills including risk management personal safety and leave-no-trace practices;
- Oversee and direct experiential learning excursions (at least once per week);
- Be physically capable of performing teaching duties regardless of the weather (rain sleet snow heat) including the ability to walk distances over uneven terrain carry a backpack and supplies;
- Knowledge of good environmental practices environmental stewardship land-based learning;
- Understanding of Indigenous principles and values passion for embedding Indigenous ways of knowing and being through regular instruction and student learning activities;
- Ability to differentiate and adapt instruction for all students in an indoor and outdoor learning environment.
