This role is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and upkeep of Westerns academic facilities through custodial assignments. Working under general supervision the position oversees custodial operations in one or more buildings leading a diverse team of cleaning specialists and/or student custodial addition to supervisory responsibilities the position may also perform related non-supervisory custodial tasks to support the shift or department as needed.

Duty: Team Leader

Tasks include:

  • Work assigned building with the team. Includes additional actions of opening lock boxes radio assignment and following applicable Facility Maintenance access security procedures.
  • Assist Custodian Supervisors in coordinating the delivery of cleaning services to building occupants/clients by implementing the team schedule based on the daily staffing levels.
  • Train new employees in proper standardized cleaning techniques.
  • Ensure that all employees are following properly the standard operating procedures.
  • Train team members to work in an individual or team environment.
  • Monitor and ensure that all safety practices are followed by assigned workers.
  • Assist Custodian 4 or Custodian 5 in the maintenance of inventory of equipment cleaning supplies and consumable supplies.
  • Assist Custodian 4 or Custodian 5 in the maintenance of employee records.
  • Support the ACS departmental and supervisory goals in the implementation of practices that increase morale teamwork and cooperation within the teams.
  • Oversees the locking and unlocking of buildings and interior rooms as required.
  • Interact with building occupants/clients to ensure the needs of the client and Facilities Maintenance are accomplished.
  • Perform daily key inventories and report discrepancies.
  • Assist in providing input for project work to ensure proper planning and completion of the necessary work in assigned buildings.

Duty: Custodian Duties

Restroom maintenance tasks include:

  • Restock toilet paper and refill all dispensers as needed.
  • Empty trash clean and sanitize all fixtures clean mirrors.
  • Spot clean and sanitize partitions and doors.
  • Sweep and mop tile floors.
  • Check all fixtures and make a note of any damage or burned out light bulbs.

Light duty tasks include:

  • Empty trash and reinstall liners.
  • Wipe doorknobs and light switches.
  • Dust all horizontal and vertical surfaces.
  • Pick up paper clips paper and pencils from floor spot clean door glass.
  • Position trash can in strategic location for the utility specialist to pick up and take to the dumpster.
  • In classrooms wipe down tables tablet armchairs and clean white or chalk boards clean erasers and restock with chalk.

Utility maintenance tasks include:

  • Interim floor and carpet care (between scheduled major cleaning).
  • Spot cleaning of carpets and haul trash to the dumpster.
  • Polish stairs.
  • Vacuum or sweep stairwells.
  • Clean door glass.
  • Restore and maintain floors.

Vacuuming buildings tasks include:

  • Check each trash can before vacuuming beneath it.
  • Vacuum all traffic areas and spot vacuum all other areas according to the vacuuming schedule.
  • Remove debris on furniture.
  • Reposition all furniture correctly turn out lights upon completion of the room and secure area as required.

Project cleaning tasks include:

  • Project clean multiple seating.
  • Project clean walk-off mats.
  • Clean lockers and benches.
  • May collect recyclable materials.
  • May set up and remove furniture before special events.
  • Assist Custodian 4 or 5 in the oversight of project cleaning.

Performing periodic maintenance tasks include:

  • Under direct supervision and using appropriate methodology and equipment perform interim cleaning maintenance or restoration of all floor types on campus and any assigned deep cleaning.
  • Clean and restock custodial closet.
  • Daily operator-level maintenance and use of custodial equipment as required.
  • Move furniture supplies and tools on an incidental basis.
  • Report need for repair and/or maintenance.
  • Wash interior or easily accessible exterior windows.
  • Clean light covers and diffusers.
  • Perform cleaning and related activities in assigned exterior areas using hand-operated tools or small power equipment to remove debris or to sweep sidewalks or stairs. Any snow removal will be limited to major exterior academic building entrances immediately adjacent to the exterior doors.

In all aspects of this role the Custodian 3 is expected to integrate principles of accessibility diversity equity and inclusion across all areas of responsibility. Required Qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in a housekeeping janitorial or custodial work environment
  • At least two years in a leadership position in a service industry or one year of experience as a custodial housekeeping or janitorial lead
  • Effectively read and understand written information and instructions.
  • Effectively communicate information and instructions verbally in a clear and effective way for a diverse team or one on one.
  • Ability to use typical tools and equipment used to accomplish job tasks: broom mop brushes dust mops sponges rags ladder wet mop bucket backpack vacuum upright vacuum wide area vacuum carpet extractor rotary floor machine custodial cart spray bottles wringers and squeegees.
  • Training or demonstrated experience working with hard floor maintenance and restoration including stripping refinishing and burnishing floors.
  • Training or demonstrated experience in hot water carpet extraction and setting up carpet drying system.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and interact with a diverse workforce.
  • Ability to read and understand written information and instructions.
  • Experience working in sensitive situations such as: operational offices classrooms dorm rooms rest rooms etc.
  • Valid drivers license or the ability to obtain one prior to starting work in order to drive a state-owned vehicle for travel to work locations.
  • Physically perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to perform daily work tasks independently under limited supervision.
  • Ability to work with computer hardware and software to record time worked.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience providing team cleaning custodial duties in a commercial and/or institutional setting.
  • Experience as a team cleaning leader or supervisor for a minimum of two years
  • Formal leadership/management training.
  • Additional experience in water restoration cleaning.
