Range Explanation:

  • Hiring Range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors including your skills qualifications experience education licenses training and internal equity.

  • Pay Range is the entire compensation range for the position.

The Aquatic Supervisor position consists of rotating days to include weekends and both day and evening hours and is in the Recreation Division of the Parks and Recreation this position you will oversee the NWYMCA-Thad Terry Aquatics Center partnership including managing the year-round Lifeguard team prospective and returning staff trainings and in-services during the calendar school year. During the summer months you will assist the aquatic leadership team in managing all of the season aquatic facilities staff and programming including special events and aquatic safety trainings for the public.

This role supervises plans and coordinates activities and administrative duties related to a Pima County Parks and Recreation year-round swimming pool during the school year (approximately September-April) and assists the aquatics management team with programming and staff supervision of the summer seasonal pools. Assists the aquatics management team with the training of Lifeguard I and Lifeguard II certifications.

Essential Functions:

As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act this classification may include any of the following tasks knowledge skills and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this class. Work assignments may vary depending on the departments need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.

  • Supervises trains evaluates and assigns duties to pool and recreation personnel;

  • Prepares and monitors work schedules of lifeguards to ensure uninterrupted pool coverage;

  • Monitors daily financial matters such as payroll change funds and cash procedures

  • Acts as a liaison between NRPR and partnering agencies such as the YMCA and school districts as well as various County departments.

  • Coordinates the training process to certify swim lesson instructors and lifeguards;

  • Assists in the supervision of the lifeguard training team for all classes taught;

  • Participates in and teaches aquatic and safety certification trainings as necessary;

  • Provides community outreach through special events and pool programming;

  • Resolves customer issues and implements corrective procedures;

  • Coordinates the acquisition storage and distribution of supplies and equipment to support aquatic activities;

  • Maintains Pima County property such as safety equipment maintenance equipment electronics and various items found in aquatics facilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

Current certification in Lifeguarding and either Swim Instructor or Lifeguard Instructor plus:two seasons of experience as a Lifeguard (60 days season)* ANDone season of experience as Swim Instructor or Lifeguard Instructor (60 days season)*.

OR

Two Seasons of experience in a lead or supervisory capacity with lifeguards (60 days season)*.

*all of the required experience may be accumulated concurrently

(For purposes of on-boarding and attending required in-house trainings will accept Ellis Lifeguarding YMCA Lifeguarding and StarGuard Lifeguarding certifications if current status can be verified. Must successfully complete an American Red Cross Lifeguard Crossover Course after appointment before providing surveillance and supervision of a County-owned public swimming pool)

(For purposes of on-boarding will accept YMCA Swim Instructor or American Red Cross Swim Instructor certifications if current status can be verified. Must successfully complete a Starfish Aquatics Swim Instructor Crossover before working as a swim instructor)

(For purposes of on-boarding will accept Ellis YMCA and StarGuard Lifeguard Instructor certifications if current status can be verified. Must successfully complete an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Crossover Course.)

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):

  • Current certification as an American Red Cross Swim Lesson Instructor Trainer or Starfish Swim Lesson Instructor Trainer.

  • Current certification as an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor or Starguard Lifeguard Instructor.

  • Experience providing lifeguard certification trainings and conducting lifeguard in-services.

  • Minimum one (1) year experience supervising a lifeguard team of 10 or more.

Selection Procedure:

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidates from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Supplemental Information:

Licenses and Certifications: Lifeguarding and Swim Instructor or Lifeguard Instructor certification are required on the date of appointment. American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification and either Starfish Aquatics Swim Instructor certification or American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification is required within 3 months of appointment. Some positions require a Pool Operator license after hiring appointment. Some positions may be required to obtain their lifeguard instructor and/or swim lesson instructor trainer certification. Failure to obtain/maintain the required certification/licensure shall be grounds for termination. Valid driver license is required at time of application.ValidAZdriver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicants suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination.

Special Notice Items:Must be able to perform and execute the essential job functions of a Lifeguard I Lifeguard II and Lifeguard III as necessary to sustain pool safety and service of the aquatics operation. As a condition of employment or continued employment positions within this classification may be required to submit to a criminal history background check with state and federal agencies pursuant to A.R.S. 41-1750 and Public Law 92-544. Must be able to work independently at times with minimal supervision. The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history education and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County.

Physical/Sensory Work Requirements:Physical and sensory abilities will be determined by position.

Working Conditions: Constantly works in outdoor environments including varying inclement weather conditions. Additional working conditions will be determined by position.
