Job Description

Employment Opportunity: Housing & Homelessness Director
Location: Halifax NS
Salary Range: $90000 (based on skills/experience)
Employment Term: September/October 2025 to March 31st 2026 (possibility of renewal) Full time hours (35 hours/ week)
Reports To: Executive Director& Associate Executive Director
General Description:
Mikmaw Native Friendship Centre is centrally located in the urban Indigenous community of Halifax and is looking for One (1) Housing & Homelessness Director. The Housing & Homelessness Director will report directly to the Executive and Associate Executive Directors to ensure cohesive alignment with the overall operations and strategy of The Mikmaw Native Friendship Centre.
This position will oversee all existing supportive housing and homelessness departments programs and facilities to increase consistency and equity amongst policies budgets and this role you will be responsible for developing efficient organization systems developing and maintaining funder and stakeholder relationships ensuring effective documentation practices securing funding and ensuring that contribution agreement requirements are being met appropriately and the frequent monitoring of financial statements program forecasts (FPEs) and activities. Overseeing a reporting calendar for all housing and homelessness related contributions and activities is essential to continued MNFC operations service accessibility and good standing as a local non-profit organization.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Sound knowledge of current social issues facing the urban Indigenous Community and how said factors are influencing urban Indigenous housing insecurity and homelessness such as; Mental health and addictions intimate partner violence youth aging out of care involvement with the justice system and incarceration etc.
  • Familiarity and experience working with local non-profit housing and homelessness service providers and what resources and support exist in the urban setting of Kjipuktuk/Halifax.
  • Excellent written and oral communication interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate the delivery of a broad range of housing and homelessness related programming and supports; Should be knowledgeable of market standards of cost of living sector salary ranges typical policies and the local Coordinated Access system.
  • Ability to summarize and explain complex program information and funding requirements.
  • General administrative duties such as; Ensuring all client information is kept and filed accordingly maintaining budgets and all finance records pertaining to the properties.
  • Ensure confidentially of all records and files unless otherwise authorized by The Executive or Associate Executive Director(s).
  • Ensure that policies and protocols are being followed and upheld in a good way that supports both the wellbeing of community members/clients and MNFC staff.
  • The Housing & Homelessness Director will use their discretion to handle any unforeseen problems that arise within or between any of the following MNFC housing department and internal housing facilities; Sage House 4-plex (Etli-SankewimK) Mount Hope Black Street and The Diamond Bailey Healing Centre. Any decisions made will need to be properly communicated to all Managers.
  • Experience managing large budgets with multiple contribution agreements; and the ability to maintain and record all finances in alignment with MNFC financial process(s) & protocol.
  • Other related duties as assigned
Qualifications and Experience Required for the Position:
  • 5-10 years experience working within Indigenous communities or other non-profit organizations
  • 3-5 years experience in a leadership or supervisory role
  • 2-3 years of experience working within property management sector considered an asset.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and comprehensive cultural knowledge considered an asset.
  • Previous project and/or business management experience considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated skills in guiding individuals and the utilization of new practices in working with clients based on models of practice and Indigenous culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively as a part of an interprofessional team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and show initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to represent and respect the interest of clients.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word Excel Outlook Access PowerPoint).
  • Successful applicant will be required to provide a Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector Check) Reliable means of transportation (must own a working vehicle) Provide copy of valid class 5 drivers license recent abstract.
