Investigational Drug Services Pharmacist - Oncology

The Investigational Drug Services Pharmacist - Oncology performs responsibilities that support both clinical investigational drug trials and oncology infusion pharmacy operations. Duties include coordinating and overseeing investigational drug services supporting infusion pharmacy workflows as needed maintaining regulatory compliance providing education and communication support ensuring safe and efficient dispensing of medications and supervising pharmacy staff involved in both investigational and clinical services. This pharmacist plays a key role in ensuring the Cayuga Cancer Center Pharmacy meets all legal accreditation and policy requirements.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Investigational Drug Services

  • Reviews investigational drug trial protocols and stays current with all protocol amendments and updates.
  • Collaborates with principal investigators research coordinators and/or trial assistants to define the pharmacys role establish billing and fee processes and implement study-specific dispensing and compounding procedures.
  • Trains and orients staff involved in investigational trials to ensure protocol adherence.
  • Maintains a study-specific pharmacy binder for each trial including a protocol summary procedures documentation templates checklists billing information and regulatory materials.
  • Manages investigational inventory: orders stores reconciles and returns materials as needed.
  • Communicates concerns related to protocol deviations or ethical issues to appropriate research personnel.
  • Ensures alignment between investigational drug protocols and institutional/inpatient pharmacy policies.
  • Provides drug information to the healthcare team as it relates to investigational products.
  • Maintains audit-ready documentation and supports sponsor inspections as required.
  
  

  Administrative

  • Maintains ongoing training and competencies required for investigational pharmacy support.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary team meetings related to clinical trials.
  • Promotes professional development of staff and remains evergreen in the practice of Investigational Drug Services.
  • Monitors daily operations to ensure protocol compliance accurate dispensing and correct billing practices.
  • Supervises pharmacy technicians supporting investigational workflows and admixture processes.
  • Tracks workload and operational data; assists with reporting and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participates in sponsor audits site visits and compliance reviews.
  • Identifies and supports operational efficiencies and revenue-generating opportunities in collaboration with leadership.
  
  

  Oncology Infusion

  • Enforces policies that ensure safe appropriate and cost-effective use of chemotherapy and supportive care agents.
  • Verifies chemotherapy regimens admixture preparation labeling and dosing accuracy.
  • Assists in the development of order sets protocols and medication utilization reviews to optimize therapy.
  • Collaborates with providers and clinical staff to evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of drug therapies.
  • Manages or supports responses to chemotherapy spills extravasation or hypersensitivity reactions.
  • Utilizes all pharmacy information systems effectively including Epic Beacon and related platforms.
  • Ensures proper accountability for all medications (controlled and non-controlled).
  • Cross-covers infusion pharmacy responsibilities when needed to support the team.

Required Skills and Experience:

• Education - Graduate of an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy with either a BS pharmacy or PharmD required.
• Experience - PGY1/PGY2 pharmacy residency preferably in Oncology or Investigational Drug service and/or Board of Pharmacy Specialty certification in any one of the following is required: Oncology Ambulatory Care Critical Care or Pharmacotherapy.
• Licensure - Currently licensed in the State of New York.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

• Three years health system experience or at least one year of Oncology Infusion Pharmacy experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

• Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g. use of computer keyboard); may require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs.) including boxes equipment unit-dose cassettes and IV solutions and stooping and kneeling (e.g. to pick up items from the floor to remove and replace items on lower shelves and to file documents in lower file drawers); sitting walking or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours) is often necessary; must be able physically to operate the equipment used for the job.

Location and Travel Requirements:

• Onsite Cayuga Cancer Center: 401 Cayuga Park Lane Suite 300 Ithaca NY
• Schedule: Full-Time Days. Clinic hours 8am-5pm
• Travel: 0% to 10% Local Travel can be expected.

Pay Range Disclosure:

• $115398.40 to $145600.00 per year plus benefits
