Job Description

NOIRLab is seeking a dedicated and experienced Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) & Security Coordinator to help ensure the safety and security of our people facilities and operations across Chilean sites including high-altitude observatories. If youre passionate about risk management physical security and safety culture in a global scientific environmentthis is your opportunity.

WHAT YOULL DO

  • Develop implement and maintain security programs that protect personnel assets and infrastructure.
  • Coordinate all physical security operations including guards video surveillance access control and alarm systems.
  • Conduct regular threat vulnerability and risk assessments (TVAs) and recommend improvements.
  • Oversee and supervise security contractors and systems across offices observatories and other facilities.
  • Lead investigations of security incidents and collaborate with local authorities when necessary.
  • Support general EHS operations and contribute to safety planning and training initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with national and international security and safety regulations.
  • Promote a proactive culture of safety and security throughout NOIRLab.

    WHAT YOU BRING

    • A technical degree in Safety Engineering or a related field plus a Security Certification (e.g. OS-10).
    • At least 5 years of safety experience and 2 years in physical security (can be combined).
    • At least 3 years in a supervisor role.
    • Strong understanding of safety/security regulations codes and best practices.
    • Experience with electronic security systems (CCTV ACS IDS).
    • Excellent communication and training skills in both English and Spanish.
    • Level of English (Preferred): Able to understand and communicate effectively in most everyday and professional situations. Can participate in meetings write clear emails and reports and hold conversations on familiar and some technical topics. Comfortable reading documents following instructions and engaging in both spoken and written communication with fluency and accuracy.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks work independently and coordinate cross-functional teams.
    • Willingness and ability to travel to high-altitude observatory sites and perform field work.

      PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

      • Applicants must hold a valid OS-10 certification issued by Carabineros de Chile.
      • Knowledge of observatory infrastructure and day-to-day operations would be an asset.
      • Experience working in international or multicultural environments.
      • Diploma or postgraduate studies in security-related subjects (e.g. risk management public safety private security).
      • Experience in roles involving security coordination or supervision.

      PHYSICAL & OTHER REQUIREMENTS

      • Must be able to work at altitudes up to 2700 meters (Cerro Tololo & Cerro Pachn).
      • Valid drivers license required; ability to drive in remote terrain.
      • May require medical clearance post-offer and during employment.
