Job Description

Position Summary

The Theatre Maintenance Technician serves as the leader of organizing the backstage auxiliary spaces with duties including overseeing the inventory of all theatrical properties purchasing shop equipment needed organizing lighting sound and scenic instruments and leading student workers in their organizational duties in the spaces. This position will report directly to the Director of Theatre and work closely with production staff to ensure shop safety and maintenance. The Theatre Maintenance Technician maintains frequent contact with the Director of Theatre various departments and personnel and outside vendors.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain the Todd Wehr Auditorium and all of its auxiliary spaces (this includes but is not limited to regularly straightening and cleaning areas before and after productions and at the end of each semester; manage Auditorium space requests)
  • Maintain inventory of theatre-related props costumes and equipment in designated storage areas and controls records.
  • Schedules trains and provides work direction and guidance to others as directed
  • Designs and participates in the set construction and rigging as directed; prepares and controls stage lighting and sound systems as directed.
  • Assists with the coordination of theater facilities usage; participates in planning meetings and rehearsals for theatre productions and other events for campus and off-campus organizations.
  • Oversees the use of hand and power tools and equipment; assures the safe use and security of all tools lighting and sound equipment.
  • Recommends stage equipment and supplies to be ordered; picks up equipment and supplies when necessary; assists in the development of theater and production budgets as required.
  • Assists student crews to assure the development of students in the technical areas.
  • Maintains and enforces fire safety and health regulations.
  • Operates a variety of woodworking tools lighting equipment and sound equipment used in the technical operation of the theater; maintains tools and equipment in proper working condition.
  • Provides technical assistance and directs the work of theater students and student technicians in the safe operation and use of theater tools and equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the basic principles and philosophies of stage productions
  • Knowledge of stage operations including lighting sound rigging and set construction
  • Knowledge of methods equipment materials and terminology used in theatre production management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of stage carpentry painting and/or electrical work
  • Knowledge and application of fire regulations and other safety codes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Strong organizational and time management skills able to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to lift and move large furniture and equipment.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Will be able to demonstrate shop safety and keep tools and equipment organized.
  • Supportive of the mission and values of Concordia University Wisconsin/Ann Arbor and the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS)

Education and Experience

  • Minimum two (2) years of technical theatre instruction in a college or professional theatre program including experience involving set construction design and operation and maintenance of stage equipment and materials OR minimum of 3 years field experience in technical theatre and/or shop maintenance.
  • Bachelors Degree in Theatre or related field

Compensation and Benefits

This is a part time (less than 20 hours a week) non-exempt position. The starting wage may be determined upon education and/or experience. Tuition benefits are available for employees and qualified dependents.
