Job Description
Long Term School Nurse SubstituteAugust 25 2025 to October 20 2025 (possibly longer)Position:School NurseJob Goals:1. The school nurse is a registered professional nurse who is certified with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.2. The school nurse supports student success by providing health care through assessment intervention and follow-up for all children within the school setting. 3. The school nurse addresses the physical mental emotional and social health needs of students and supports their achievement in the learning process.4. The school nurse not only provides for the safety and care of students and staff but also addresses the need for integrating health solutions into the education setting.5. The school nurse provides acute chronic episodic and emergency health care to all students within the South Hadley Public Schools Supervision: Reports to the Director of Student ServicesExperience and Training:1. Possession of a current Massachusetts Registered Nurse License2. Certification as required by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education3. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptablePerformance Responsibilities:1. Provides health assessments including mandated health screenings2. Develops and implements Individual Health Care Plans3. Administers daily and PRN medications to students with accompanying physician orders.4. Provides direct care and refers as needed in the event of acute illness injury and/or emotional disturbances5. Provides early detection and reports communicable and contagious diseases6. Provides health information to assist students and families and staff in making health- related decisions7. Serves as a resource person to school personnel8. Oversees the implementation of Massachusetts Department of Public Health policies and participates in activities related to the Essential School Health Services Grant9. Is responsible for maintaining and updating cumulative electronic health records10. Assists in the development and revision of school health policies procedures and standing orders11. Orders supplies for the health room annually12. Maintains communication with the principal and superintendent on health related issues.13. Attends professional development related to the care of school children as per licensing mandates14. Trains staff in emergency procedures EpiPen use universal precautions and other health-related issues Terms of Employment: As agreed upon through the negotiated union contractEvaluation: Performance of the job will be evaluated on a yearly basis by the Director of Student Services or designee consistent with the requirements and expectations of Massachusetts Educator Evaluation 603 CMR 35.00 and locally developed Requirement:The position requires a moderate amount of walking running standing sitting and climbing stairs and step stool. Activities also include moderate physical exertion in body movement such as reaching bending twisting grasping pushing and pulling of objects. The position requires lifting objects of 20 pounds on a frequent basis and over 20 pounds occasionally. There is a frequent requirement of fine motor manipulation associated with the required use of a computer typewriter keyboard calculator and other business machines. Environmental Conditions: The employee is required to work indoors. The regular chemical solvents are toners and cleaning fluids.
