Description of Work


As of the date of this initial posting this position is considered subject to the North Carolina Human Resources Act. The North Carolina Office of the State Auditor (OSA) is seeking a Data Scientist. This position will play a critical role in leveraging data science methodologies to support audit functions and investigations involving the development of predicting models analyzing large datasets and uncovering actionable insights to improve government accountability.

OSA is the states Fiscal Watchdog. We hold state government and entities that receive public money accountable working on behalf of North Carolinians to eliminate waste fraud and abuse.


This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) withState Benefitsincluding:


As part of our team you will get to:
  • Develop machine learning models to detect fraud anomalies and inefficiencies in government programs
  • Create dashboards and visualizations to effectively communicate findings to auditors and stakeholders
  • Work collaboratively with data analysts and auditors
  • Automate data processing pipelines and improve data collection methodologies
  • Stay updated with emerging trends in data science and government analytics

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

A bachelors degree in computer science or an IT related field or a related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in business application consulting or development

OR

An associate degree in computer science or an IT related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in application consulting or development

OR

A high school or general educational development (GED) diploma and six years of experience in business application consulting or development

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience
