With over 80 years in the sawmill business Hampton operates sawmills in Oregon Washington and British Columbia and markets wood products all over the world. Hampton also manages a wholesale and lumber export division and numerous reload remanufacturing and engineered wood manufacturing and sales operations throughout the U.S. through affiliates Idaho Timber and RedBuilt. All of Hamptons forestlands are certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) an independent non-profit organization that promotes sustainable forest management. SFI-certified forests play an important role in water conservation wildlife habitat and climate solutions.

Overview

Hampton Lumber is seeking an HR Manager to join our team at our Warrenton OR sawmill. This is a highly visible people-focused role that serves as a trusted partner to plant leadership and employees alike. The HR Manager will support the full employee lifecycleincluding recruiting onboarding compliance and retentionwhile maintaining a strong presence throughout the mill. Success in this role means being proactive approachable and engaged in the plant not just behind a desk. The ideal candidate brings a balanced approach of empathy and accountability and is confident offering respectful solutions-oriented input to support both people and plant performance.

Responsibilities

  • Recruitment & Hiring: Lead local recruiting efforts and develop strategies to attract top talent. Work with supervisors to build and maintain candidate pipelines.
  • Onboarding & Orientation: Design and facilitate welcoming organized onboarding experiences to ensure new hires feel prepared and connected.
  • Employee Relations: Serve as a neutral trusted resourcecounselor coach and connectorhelping employees navigate workplace issues and grow professionally.
  • Employee Discipline & Termination: Ensure processes are fair compliant and well-documented. Partner with supervisors to uphold expectations and support consistent leadership practices.
  • Training & Development: Coordinate employee training sessions; collaborate on skill development safety training and leadership growth programs.
  • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of project best practices that impact safety quality and productivity.
  • Safety & Compliance: Collaborate with safety teams and supervisors to identify risks and promote a culture of safety. Ensure HR policies and practices meet all legal and regulatory standards.
  • Payroll & Benefits: Support payroll changes open enrollment FMLA coordination and benefits-related needs in partnership with corporate HR.
  • Retention & Culture: Build team cohesion help prevent burnout or apathy and support recognition and engagement strategies.
  • Record Keeping & Administration: Maintain accurate HR records support audits and ensure documentation is complete and confidential.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • 35 years of experience in an HR generalist or HR manager role ideally in a manufacturing industrial or similarly fast-paced environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of employment laws and HR compliance requirements (e.g. FMLA ADA EEO wage & hour).
  • Demonstrated experience handling employee relations investigations and performance management with fairness and discretion.
  • Comfortable facilitating onboarding training and employee meetings.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; able to build trust across all levels of the organization.
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality professionalism and sound judgment in sensitive situations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word Excel Outlook) and HRIS systems.
  • Willing and able to spend regular time throughout the plant site engaging with employees and supervisors.

Preferred Skills:

  • Conflict resolution and coaching: Skilled at navigating tough conversations and supporting both employees and supervisors through challenges.
  • Influence and relationship-building: Able to push back respectfully when needed while maintaining trust and strong working relationships across the site.
  • Change management and communication: Comfortable leading policy rollouts or process changes with clarity and empathy.
  • Visibility and engagement: Naturally present and approachablesomeone who builds trust by being out in the plant and checking in regularly.

Hampton took over management of the Warrenton plant in 2010 however this site has had a sawmill on it since 1921. We currently employ 140 people some of which have worked here for over 30 years while others have just started their careers.
