Job Description

I. Purpose

The Outcomes Data Scientist turns complex data into clear evidence that shows whether speech-language pathology and audiology services are effective equitable and valuable. Partnering with ASHAs National Center for Evidence-Based Practice the role develops and tests outcome measures builds risk-adjusted models and produces policy-ready analyses that guide clinical standards and advocacy. The Outcomes Data Scientist also collaborates across ASHA clusters to supply timely data-driven insights that improve decisions in both health and education settings.

II. Key Responsibilities

  1. Conduct psychometric testing to evaluate the validity reliability and applicability of new and existing outcome measures across diverse populations.
  2. Perform statistical analyses and provide related consultation to N-CEP staff to support the development of data-driven resources such as demonstration of value factsheets outcomes reports meta-analyses evidence-based systematic reviews and practice guidelines.
  3. Develop and apply statistical models and methodologies (e.g. risk adjustment) to facilitate meaningful comparisons of quality measures across populations providers and facilities.
  4. Identify integrate and analyze large-scale external datasets (e.g. Medicare Medicaid claims data education records) with internal registries to support clinical research on effectiveness equity and cost-benefit of services.
  5. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand data needs deliver ad hoc statistical consultation and provide data-driven insights.
  6. Communicate complex findings through accessible reports data visualizations and presentations for diverse audiences including clinicians researchers A economists and other statistical consultants.

V. Qualifications & Skills

Qualifications:

Knowledge typically acquired through:

  • Five or more years of hands-on experience applying psychometrics and advanced statistical modelingdesigning and validating outcome measures building risk-adjusted models and integrating large healthcare or education datasets to answer clinical or policy questions.
  • Masters degree in Statistics Data Science Psychometrics Education Measurement or related field.

Skills

  • Psychometrics Proficiency in classical and IRT item analyses Rasch analysis equating studies reliability and validity studies sampling plans item calibration scaling and experimental design.
  • Statistical Modeling Expertise with multiple regression ANOVA/ANCOVA factor analysis and mixed-effects models.
  • Programming Fluency in R Python SAS SPSS or equivalent and IRT software.
  • Data Management Ability to collect integrate and analyze large healthcare or education datasets and interpret federal codebooks.
  • Communication Ability to explain complex issues and findings using clear accessible language tailored to technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Collaboration Ability to work independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams.
  • Project Management Strong organizational prioritization and time-management skills to effectively balance multiple projects.
  • Curiosity and Learning Mindset Continuously questioning assumptions stress-testing ideas and exploring problems from multiple perspectives.
  • Structured Problem-Solving Breaking down complex challenges into manageable parts iterating thoughtfully and working closely with subject matter experts.
  • Usability and Impact Designing solutions that are practical actionable and aligned with real stakeholder needs.
