Job Summary

The Office of Academic Advising (OAA) provides academic advising support to undergraduate students and faculty advisors through one-on-one meetings classroom visits and group workshops and training. OAA supports academic recovery (probation) students students exploring their major options incoming transfer students and students who have received Daniels Fund awards and Denver Scholarship Foundation awards. OAA supports the DU Academic Advising Model by leading central communications to department chairs more than 300 faculty advisors and more than 15 staff advisors and through quarterly meetings. OAA works closely with the Director of Faculty Advising to support the unique needs of department chairs.

Housed within Academic Affairs the Office of Student Success of which Academic Advising is a part promotes academic excellence engagement and student thriving by empowering students to make the most of their experience at the University of Denver. Academic Affairs collaborates with the schools divisions academic departments the faculty and student life to develop programs curricula and experiences that support inspire and challenge students. Our Student Success work is defined by our mission to advance a university-wide culture of holistic student thriving by developing and promoting best practices in student success and advising; driving data-informed decision-making processes and providing meaningful outreach to students that is both responsive and proactive.

Position Summary

Through daily meetings with students this position works with all undergraduate students to ensure their transition persistence and success at the University.

This position will work primarily on the University of Denvers campus.

Essential Functions

Academic Advising

Responsible for implementing appropriate office processes and practices to support and inform a proactive advising model. This includes:

  • Holistically advising a quarterly load of approximately 300 undergraduate students with diverse backgrounds and educational needs regarding degree planning course registration major/minor exploration and understanding the Common Curriculum and general undergraduate requirements in the effort to ensure their transition persistence and success at DU.
  • Providing information and guidance on academic-related administrative processes such as Academic Exceptions Academic Standards Course Overloads and Leaves of Absence.
  • Proactively tracking outreaching to and working with students identified through early intervention systems (i.e. high-risk first generation students who have not been in for an appointment students on academic probation etc.).
  • Coordinating and/or participating in the advising-related role of New/Transfer Student Discoveries Orientation program.
  • Connecting students to student support resources offices and departments across campus as needed to support holistic student development and success;
  • Participating in the assessment and evaluation of academic policies services and programs.
  • Maintaining thorough accurate pertinent documentation of student records and individual advising sessions within FERPA guidelines.

Office Collaboration

  • Serves as a liaison and fosters intentional relationships with other departments and faculty advisors at the direction of Office leadership
  • Participate in unit department and/or campus-wide committees.
  • Professional development
  • Engages in on-going professional development activities including but not limited to memberships in professional organizations such as NACADA; attendance at conferences workshops division and department training sessions.
  • Advising Model Support
  • At the direction of Office leadership supports the development of trainings and resources for staff and faculty advisors across campus.

  • Knowledge of student learning and student development.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in counseling psychology or related field
  • 2 years of full-time post-baccalaureate advising related experience in an educational setting.
  • Experience working with faculty staff families and students.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.A. in psychology counseling social work higher education or related field
  • Knowledge of learning strategies academic coaching developmental advising models and student development theories.
  • Experience with programming and outreach
  • Proficiency in Banner

Working Environment

  • Standard office environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 7.

Hourly Range:
The hourly range for the position is $26.05-$26.40.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate departmental budget availability internal salary equity considerations and available market information but not based on a candidates sex or any other protected status.
