Job Description

Consultant Ophthalmologist
Dunedin Hospital
Salary: Base salary from ASMS MECA 2024 (NZD 185380 - 267980)

Fixed Term 1.0 FTE (August 2025 - February 2026)

We are seeking a fixed term general ophthalmologist from August 2025 - February 2026.

About the role
The Dunedin Public Hospital Eye Department provides ophthalmology services to all of Otago and Southland so we require a dynamic hardworking individual with excellent time management skills to become an integral part of our close-knit team. Our links with the University of Otago and affiliation with the Otago Medical School means that you are an honorary lecturer to Medical Students and there is a chance to be involved in research. We also provide training to registrars from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and enjoy helping them on their journey towards becoming a future ophthalmologist and often host the Part 2 course prep in the department.

We are seeking an Ophthalmologist that knows the New Zealand health system intricately and the constraints we face within ophthalmology so we welcome applications from a forward thinking innovative ophthalmologist that loves challenges and working in a busy department. This role is primarily based in Dunedin but some travel across the Southern District is expected. You will be expected to participate in the 1:6 on call roster routine ophthalmology clinics theatre and some outreach clinics.

About you

  • Able to start from August 2025 and cover until March 2026.
  • Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • Enthusiastic about teaching and passing your knowledge to junior members of staff
  • Excellent communication and time management skills

Salary range
This role belongs to the ASMS Collective Agreement and falls between the Step 1 ($185380) and Step 15 ($267980 per annum pro rata).
