The Louisiana Special Schools are experiencing a critical shortage of certified teachers school counselorsinterpreters and educators of the Deaf or hard of hearing and Visually Impaired.

The General Counsel serves as the chief legal advisor to the Superintendent and provides consultation and direction on legal matters with other leadership personnel at the Special School District (SSD). This position directs the legal activities with broad scope to ensure all schools within the district are in compliance with statutes policies rules and regulations in the education arena. This position supervises the Executive Counsel position assigning roles responsibilities and functions for the provision of legal services at the Special School District.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school
  • Three years of legal experience
  • Member of Louisiana State Bar or member in good standing of the State Bar of another state or District of Columbia
Desired qualifications:
  • Experience representing public agencies or educational institutions
  • Experience with leases contracts and public/private transactions

Job Specification

  • Represents the SSD and Superintendent in complex and important litigation such as precedent cases before trial and appellate courts and administrative tribunals.
  • Advises on education-related matters relative to students and/or staff of the SSD.
  • Provides training to District leadership on policies legal requirements and other relevant topics.
  • Advises SSD leadership concerning the legal implications of proposed policies and actions especially those related to students and student activities.
  • Furnishes legal advice relating to and coordinating preparation for administrative hearings involving senior administrators and /or committees.
  • Assists with internal investigations as needed.
  • Advises and supports the Title IX Coordinator in all matters related to Title IX.
  • Assists with responses to requests for public records.
  • Others duties as assigned.
