Job Description

The Technical Faculty of IT and Design Department of Architecture Design and Media Technology Mediatechnology Aalborg

AI:X is an ambitious initiative at Aalborg University that aims to advance AI research and create real-world impact through interdisciplinary collab oration and five labs will be initiated in 2025 with a total of 20 PhD stipends. The AI-Xpertise Lab is a part of the AI:X initiative with four PhD stipends and is a collaboration between the Department of Architecture Design and Media Technology The Technical Faculty of IT and Design an d the Department of Politics and Society the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. Stipend 1 is open for appointment from 15th of November 2025 (or soon thereafter).

Advanced AI technologies increasingly encroach on domains traditionally occupied by Expert professions - doctors architects and lawyers. While politicians think tanks and reserchers highlight the potential for job savings considerable research shows challenges in using AI in expert work. Through a novel approach integrating AI development and organizational science AI:Xpertise lab researches the technical and organizational conditions for successfully embedding AI systems in Expert Work.

The lab is
looking for candidates for the following stipend 1:

Stipend 1: PhD in AI for healthcare

This stipend revolves around building and deploying AI in healthcare. The main case will be automation of anesthetic pre-screenings. Potential auxiliary cases include evaluation of laparoscopic surgery and AI assistance for spinal surgery. The Candidates for this stipend should have a background in software engineering or similar and have substantial experience with machine learning. All cases involve various degrees of image analysis so computer vision experience is a requirement. Experience with large language models is a plus. Furthermore as AI:Epertise is about deploying AI in the real world we are looking for people with full-stack experience: You should not only be able to create and evaluate models you must also be able to buld a user interface and deploy your systems. You must also be interested in collaborating with organizational researchers given the interdisciplinary character of AI:Xpertise.

The application must include a brief description (maximum 1 page) of your motivation for the stipend as well as a proposed research plan (maximum 2 pages).

We expect to conduct interviews for stipend 1 in following dates: 20th of September 2025 till 3rd of November 2025.

Qualification requirements

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the relevant Doctoral School in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministerial Order on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (in Danish) and protocol on certain terms of employment of academic staff at universities (in Danish).

Salary and terms of employment are in accordance with the collective agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the state (AC collective agreement) (in Danish) and protocol on certain terms of employment of academic staff at universities (in Danish).
