POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Senior Accountant performs accounting and reporting tasks in support of the Controller and Accounting Department as required. Responsibilities include being responsible for the accurate timely and assurance of completion of all tasks by performing duties personally or through co-workers within the department. The essential duties and responsibilities of the position include without limitation the following:
- Support the Director of Finance and Controller with annual audit generate reports to fulfill audit requests
- Apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to a variety of problems and considerable judgement in allocating charges and credits to proper accounts and funds
- Prepare and coordinate the annual Workers Compensation audit
- Attend state and federal mandated trainings regarding finance and accounting
- Develop and regularly update excel spreadsheets that are used to create valuable reports for the Director of Finance and School Committee
- Assist with posting required Payroll Cash and Grant Journal Entries
- Assist with Monthly Bank Reconciliations
- Review monthly financial reports as to their accuracy and proper coding of all accounts
- Assist all clerks in the district by answering questions that may arise regarding financial information
- Assist in the preparation of schedules for the annual fiscal and compliance audits
- Prepare and record monthly Health Dental Life premium journal entries and reconciliation of monthly bills
- Create UCOA (Uniform Chart of Accounts) strings. Confirm compliance of UCOA accounts with Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE)
- Review and approve monthly Student Activity Account bank reconciliations received from the schools
- Support Controller and Assistant Controller with Budget Uploads grant & bond budgets in general ledger system
- Create modify and edit custom fiscal and budget reports as needed to meet district fiscal administrative needs
- Reconcile grant expenditures book corresponding revenues on a monthly basis
- Provide audit support for the districts annual single audit (audit of federal program funding)
- Maintain schedules of district employees who are paid via grant and regularly confirm with HR/Payroll that payments are correct
- Assist with booking of cash receipts through bank accounts and the State of Rhode Island Payment Portal (RIPAY)
- All other duties assigned by the Executive Director of Finance and the Controller
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:
Experience:
- 35 years of progressive responsibility in a business office or accounting position
- Public sector school district or municipal finance experience preferred
Education:
- Bachelors degree in Finance or Accounting required
- Masters degree preferred
- CPA preferred
Knowledge & Skills:
- Knowledge and understanding of:
- Fund accounting
- Tyler ERP MUNIS Software
- UCOA and UCOA account segments (preferred)
- Proficiency in Microsoft software including:
- Word
- Access
- Excel
- PowerPoint
- Proficiency in Google Suite
- Thorough knowledge of federal and state accounting laws
