Krero m te tranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is seeking to appoint a permanent part-time Pkenga Matua - Senior Lecturer in Architecture within Te Whanga Waihanga-Hoahoa - Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovation. This position reports to the Tumuaki - Head of School Te Kura Waihanga - School of Architecture and is located at the Te Aro campus. The University delivers undergraduate and graduate programmes in Architectural Studies and Building Science and from 2026 it will be delivering a new Bachelor and Master of Construction October 2025 Te Whanga Waihanga-Hoahoa - Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovation will be celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Architecture at the School is founded on a combination of the creative arts and building science. It explores new spaces of architectural production through a collaborative approach to design drawing on the other disciplines in the School: interior architecture landscape architecture building science construction and planning. Students develop their expertise by means of core courses many of which they share with relevant majors such that their work is socially and environmentally informed and driven by emerging issues in practice. The programmes emphasis on building performance ensures that the work of our graduates is grounded in the realities of climate change and resilience.

The Bachelor of Architectural Studies and the Master of Architecture (Professional) are premier accredited programmes in Aotearoa.

Key responsibilities:

  • Academically rigorous teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels across a variety of formats and topics (from building services to structural systems) to the highest standards.
  • Continue or develop ongoing research activity that informs teaching and contributes to industry needs.
  • Contribution to the collegial development of the programme School and Faculty in service roles.
  • Active engagement with iwi hapu industry government professions and diverse communities.

Applicants must demonstrate some expertise in teaching and practice; have experience in the diverse roles of building services in architectural design and building performance; be confident in design or design-related teaching; understand the degree content and curriculum structure of our professional degree and show strong promise of making significant contributions to the advancement of building services to achieve sustainable outcomes.

Applicants must have a disciplinary background in architecture and be a specialist in building services with additional competencies in the field of construction. Existing or emerging research capabilities are part of your portfolio of skills although candidates may be transferring from advanced professional practice to an academic career.

Key requirements:

  • A completed PhD in a relevant field is essential.
  • An established track record in research publication and/or creative work and an established research agenda.
  • Demonstrated evidence of a high standard of teaching in a relevant field at tertiary level and good understanding of the expectations in relation to professional competencies.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising student research at Honours Masters and/or PhD level.
  • Demonstrated evidence of good oral and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with students and staff from a diverse range of backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated evidence of engagement and/or collaboration with colleagues in teaching and research.
  • Commitment to the academic discipline and to service to the University the wider community and where appropriate the profession.
  • Able to teach into diverse papers on architecture and design.
