Job Description

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Daycare Supervisor the Early Childhood Educator will provide hands-on childcare to children in Seabird Island Bands early childhood education programs in accordance with all childcare licensing requirements and the philosophies policies and objectives established by Seabird Island Band Management.


What Youll Do

Child Care

  • Provide developmentally and culturally appropriate activities and experiences for the children.
  • Assist with meals and snacks ensuring dietary needs are met.
  • Provide a safe (emotionally and physically) and healthy environment with flexible routines. Provide direct supervision of children ensuring developmentally appropriate experiences.
  • Encourage parental involvement in childrens learning.
  • Ability to honor individuality diversity and childrens emerging interests within community and family contexts.
  • Aid in the development of peer relationships social behavior and supporting a childs resilience.
  • Records Keeping and Attendance Tracking:
  • Follow the procedures for maintaining health records and for administrating medication.
  • Immediately report all accidents injuries and illnesses to the Daycare Supervisor and record such incidents in the communications book.
  • Immediately report all cases of (suspected) child abuse and or neglect to the Daycare Supervisor and /or follow the policy for reporting.
  • Assist in and participate in field trips.
  • Contribute to the ongoing operation of the center.
  • Attend and participate in regular staff meetings.
  • Follow licensing regulations.


Other Duties

  • Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.


Working / Special Conditions

  • Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Review Program Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.
  • Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sqwqel (Seabird Island Band) including our policies procedures standards of practice and laws is essential. This commitment supports our collective work the community and the responsibilities of this role.

What You Bring

  • Early Childhood Education Certificate and current license to practice required.
  • Experience working with children in an Early Childhood Education environment is required.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of early intervention child development family centered practice and community-based services required.
  • Working knowledge of appropriate assessment tools is required.
  • Extensive knowledge of social-economic issues affecting urban Aboriginal children and families on and off reserve is
    an asset.
  • Excellent coordination and time management skills required.
  • Ability to follow through with tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Physically & emotionally capable of carrying out the duties of this position while maintaining a positive and non-judgmental attitude.
  • Ability to work with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Must provide satisfactory immunization and tuberculosis testing results.
  • Valid BC Drivers License with a clean Drivers Abstract within the last 5 years.


Preferred:

  • Indigenous candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Lived experience as a member of a First Nations community.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Islands culture traditions teachings community dynamics.
  • Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.
  • Excellent writing editing and verbal communication skills.


Cultural Competency:

  • Understanding of Indigenous cultures traditions and contemporary issues.
  • Experience working within Indigenous communities and applying culturally safe practices.
  • Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.
