Background
The UBC Learning Exchange established in Vancouvers Downtown Eastside (DTES) in 1999 has developed as a welcoming informal and lively hub where UBC students and faculty and DTES residents and organizations connect pursue common interests and learn from each other in order to increase community and university capacity to bring about positive social change. It provides free educational programs for community members diverse learning opportunities for students and support for community-based research and knowledge exchange. The Learning Exchange provides a physical shared space for university and community to come together but its activities extend into the UBC campus and into the DTES community.

Job Summary
The Learning Exchange annually engages over 250 students in a range of experiences including internships practicums co-op terms course-based projects volunteer placements etc. on site within its programs and with partner organizations and also provides a diverse set of learning materials workshops and other orientations activities to over 1500 students to learn about the Downtown Eastside. Students are from a range of disciplines and include undergraduate graduate and professional programs.
The Student Learning Coordinator works closely with the Learning Exchange team faculty advisors and with support from the Director to initiate relationships with faculty and develop implement promote and evaluate student learning opportunities at the Learning Exchange and in the Downtown Eastside. The role collaborates with Learning Exchange staff UBC partners and community partners to integrate students into community programming while supporting local residents. The position plays a key role in developing and sustaining relationships between the DTES community and the UBC community through the Learning Exchange.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Director. Within the Learning Exchange works with the leadership team program and student staff. May supervise student staff.

This position functions under the direction of the Director Learning Exchange and according to established objectives. The incumbent works independently and is expected to take initiative. Recommendations are normally accepted as accurate and feasible. Work is reviewed for achievement of university goals and soundness of advice and judgment.
Supervision Given
As required manages student staff and volunteers. Participates in the hiring of student staff.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Exercises tact and diplomacy in interacting with students faculty program participants and community organizations. The Learning Exchange has a high profile in the community and engages students and program participants in situations that may be new. Staff need to minimize risk to participants and ensure the unit and the university respond sensitivity to community issues. Understands and adheres to confidentiality requirements. Errors in judgment or the disclosure of confidential information could have public consequences affecting the reputation of the Learning Exchange and UBC.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Willingness to respect diverse perspectives including perspectives in conflict with ones own
Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing ones own awareness knowledge and skills related to equity diversity and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated experience with curriculum development or educational design and programming including understanding of academic curriculum and learning objectives.
Excellent knowledge of and experience with community-based experiential learning.
Demonstrated experience supporting and supervising students preferably in community settings.
Experience with consultative planning processes in educational contexts.
Experience with program planning coordination and evaluation including setting of goals and priorities.
Demonstrated ability to lead within a team as a peer.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders in cross-cultural settings.
Experience in community development community-based organizations adult education and historically persistently and systemically marginalized communities is an asset.
Knowledge of community development principles and inner-city interests resources and organizations in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver or similar community.
Ability to maintain connection between a long-range vision and day-to-day functions; both goal and process oriented
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills
Ability to lead others and to function as an effective team member.
Excellent problem-solving skills experience in conflict resolution and ability to adapt and ability to manage a demanding workload by determining priorities planning ahead anticipating problems and meeting them head on.
Knowledge of and sensitivity to the University community and the DTES community.
Commitment to the philosophy values and goals of the Learning Exchange and UBCs strategic plan.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Software email and internet; experience in Canva or other graphic design and interactive presentation software is an asset.
