Job Description

Selection for interview is based on evaluation of complete application file. Employment offer is based on employee evaluations discipline history and attendance records training and experience references and interview results. Hourly rate placement contingent upon verification of related WA public school experience.

This position is included in the classified staff non-supervisory bargaining unit. Union shop requirements and the Collective Bargaining Agreement apply to this position.

Employment contingent upon completion and verification of form information and background check with fee to be paid by applicant.

Pay for contracted classified employees is distributed once/month on the last business day of the month. Pay for employees who work less than full year is spread through August. Questions concerning pay processes may be directed to the Personnel Office.

Eligibility for SEBB medical dental vision life insurance AD&D and LTD if anticipated to reach 630 hours in the school year. Eligibility for retirement based on 3.50 hrs/day or more for 5 or more consecutive months. Optional tax-sheltered annuities: Omni 403(b) and Deferred Compensation Plan. Personal leave vacation leave (260-day employees only) and sick leave prorated based on FTE.

Job Description: Itinerant Paraeducator - Behavior Technician

Responsible to: Director of Student Support Services or Designee

Work Year: 180 Days // 7.00 hours per day

General: The Itinerant Behavior Technician is assigned by the Director in support of the Inclusion Support Team to

implement targeted data-driven behavioral interventions at the direction of the IST Specialist to stabilize and improve

student behavior. This itinerant role requires flexibility consistent data collection collaboration with staff and the ability to

apply ABA and trauma-informed strategies with minimal daily supervision at various school sites through an itinerant

model.

Minimum Qualification:

  • High school diploma or its equivalent
  • At a minimum AA degree or higher or two years of college (72 quarter credits) or Para Pro Assessment developed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).
  • B.A. in human services-related degree program preferred or behavioral certification or equivalent preferred or willingness to obtain.
  • Training in principle-based de-escalation and restraint methodologies preferred i.e. Right Response.
  • Previous successful experience in education social work or other related occupation preferred.
  • Desire and aptitude to work with children and/or young adults with special needs is required.
  • Knowledge and skills of computer applications used to assist with student learning.
  • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively in a team situation.
  • Ability and willingness to work with a diverse student population in a culturally responsive manner.
  • Organizational skills and flexibility to respond to changing student needs.
  • Ability to interact positively and professionally with staff supervisors and students.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively monitor and manage student behavior.
  • Must be able to function in a calm efficient courteous manner under stress and to exercise careful judgment confidentiality and tact in the performance of duties.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain consistent presence at assigned worksite and regularly work hours specified under contract.
  • Valid First Aid certificate and CPR training required.
  • Valid Washington State drivers license and ability to obtain Type II license.

Position Responsibilities:

Assigned by the Director to support and assist at school sites through an itinerant role and

following the direction of the Specialists of the IST the Behavior Technician will:

  • Implement targeted behavioral interventions under the direction of an Inclusion Support Specialist to support crisis stabilization and improve student behavior.
  • Engage in assigned professional learning opportunities and feedback opportunities to build and improve required knowledge and skills necessary for the delivery of positive behavioral interventions.
  • Assist Inclusion Support Specialist in identifying and documenting antecedents effective prevention strategies and teaching techniques to reduce the intensity frequency and duration of behavioral challenges.
  • Use an ABA-based and trauma-informed behavior intervention strategies to support students with significant behavioral challenges.
  • Assist the IST Specialist and teacher in the delivery of academic instruction when necessary.
  • Conduct structured data collection with high fidelity to support the development and implementation of both formal or informal Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA) and Positive Behavior Support Plans.
  • Utilize evidence-based techniques aligned with a positive behavior support model including reinforcement schedules and crisis de-escalation strategies.
  • Implement behavior intervention plans with minimal direct daily supervision
  • Maintain highly detailed and consistent data collection on a daily basis.
  • Model or otherwise demonstrate to a variety of school staff the positive behavior intervention strategies and positive behavior support plans in use.
  • Follow a schedule which may require travel between buildings each day (itinerant) to implement the targeted behavioral support from case to case as needs arise.
  • Demonstrate flexibility dependability and strong communication skills which foster collaboration within a team-based approach.
  • Administer first aid medical assistance physical support and personal care for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill medically fragile and/or disabled children.
  • Provide physical assistance for students with special needs such as feeding toileting proper lifting and positioning of students in and out of chairs and with adaptive equipment; assist students with the use of specific equipment related to their disability (e.g. materials assistive technology visual aids).
  • Perform such other duties as from time to time may be required
  • Other training will be required for this position

Language Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to staff.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add subtract multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills and Abilities:

Ability to develop effective working relationships with students staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
