Job Description

What We Can Achieve Together:

Nearly all of Floridas ecosystems depend on fire for essential ecological functions. The Central Florida Ecosystem Restoration Team supports fire management activities across diverse ecosystems agencies and organizations in the Central Florida region to achieve fire management goals promoting ecosystem health and public safety. The Senior Burn Crew Member (SBCM) works in a team environment and participates in wildland fire operations overseeing staff and volunteers during fire related activities which include ignition control mop-up suppression monitoring. SBCM may conduct other land management activities as assigned.

As part of the SBCMs ongoing professional development they will be responsible for keeping abreast of new burn techniques and equipment to enhance skills and maintain/grow professional fire certification addition they shall work to build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and in the local community where the Conservancy works. This may include participation in wildland fire suppression activities in partnership with other non-profits local fire departments and local state and federal agencies. Together we can increase the number of acres treated gain experience and have a positive influence on natural habitats and the communities surrounding them. Specifically we will support The Nature Conservancy and partner organizations throughout Central Florida to achieve their fire management goals.

From ignition to mop-up youll tackle tasks like preparing fire lines and monitoring post-burn activities. But thats not all your journey with us means continuous growth. Master new techniques and equipment to level up your skills and certifications. Plus youll build strong relationships within the fire community and local areas where we operate.

Under the guidance of our Fire Manager and Land Management Coordinators youll assist with prescribed burns ensure safety protocols maintain equipment and operate various machinery such as ATVs UTVs tractors and chainsaws. This role may be exposed to variable weather conditions at remote locations work on difficult hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. As a full-time prescribed fire crew member you will participate in continuous prescribed fire assignments throughout a six-month term beginning January 5 2025 ending June 26 2026.

Conservation housing will be provided at either The Disney Wilderness Preserve in Kissimmee FL or Tiger Creek Preserve in Babson Park FL.

Desired Qualifications

This position requires a valid drivers license and compliance with TNCs Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles rental cars or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered high risk drivers. Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement which may include a review of the prospective employees motor vehicle record.
