The South Dakota Department of Public Safetys Office of Weights Measures and Inspections has a unique opportunity to become a State Metrologist. As a State Metrologist you will be the custodian at the State level of measurement standards that serve as the basis for ensuring equity in the marketplace and as reference standards for calibration services for industry. You will be responsible for the day to day operation of the State Metrology Laboratory including calibration of mass volume and other measurement standards or devices to ensure compliance with NIST and State legal requirements. You will maintain the States reference standards issued by the National Institute of Science and Technology as well as State owned working standards check standards field standards balances comparators load cells and other measuring equipment. You will ensure South Dakotas accuracy of measurement by performing measurements and calibrations using established procedures while maintaining measurement assurance standards using the States Quality Management System. You will provide outstanding customer service to a wide range of customers from regulatory officials service agents to commercial operators. Some out of state travel will be required for training and/or conferences.
This position is for the State Metrology Laboratory located in Sturgis. Applicant must live within 30 miles of the laboratory or be willing to relocate.
Required: Lifting 50lbs and at times up to 75lbs grabbing pulling pushing and climbing. Cannot be afraid of heights. Exposure to hazardous substances and combustible materials such as fuel.
Licenses and Certifications: Obtain Echelon III NIST Signatory status within 2 years of hire or as NIST courses are available

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
A Bachelors degree in mathematics statistics engineering chemistry physics or similar field.
Precision Measurement Equipment Laboratory or other calibration training with a minimum of 4 years experience.
Required Qualifications
Possess a high school GED or equivalent education from an accredited institution.
The ability to work independently with little to no supervision. Skilled at planning organizing and coordinating various tasks and events to meet customer needs and laboratory accreditation requirements.
The ability to read interpret and apply complex regulations and technical requirements.
Operate and maintain sensitive laboratory balances and comparators volume measurement standards and other measurement devices.
Operate a forklift. Perform light maintenance on agency and customer owned equipment as well as work with a variety of mechanical and electronic equipment.
Operate computers and other common office equipment including a 10-digit scientific calculator and be proficient Microsoft Excel version 2010 or newer.
Collect data and perform statistical analysis for measurement assurance.
Positive eager to learn attitude.
Knowledge of:
Knowledge of the following programs are beneficial but not required for the position.
Weights & Measures Program pertaining to scale and meter devices;
understand laws and regulations applicable to inspections conducted by inspections staff;
understand proper implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs);
knowledge of NIST Handbooks 44 133 and 143 as well as length mass capacity mathematics and metric system;
experience with quality systems such as ISO/IEC 17025.
