Position Summary
The Johnston Blaze Swim Club Head Team Coach is responsible for managing and directing the Blaze Swim Club program under the supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator. The coach oversees all practices swim meets and related activities and provides swim club members with individual instruction tailored to the needs and skill ability of each individual.
Qualifications Certifications and Experience:
Pre-Employment Certifications
(Responsibility of the EMPLOYEE to earn and maintain; Time spent on the certification courses are not covered by the employer*)
- USA Swimming Coach Certification - Level 1 (Level 2 required by 1 year anniversary of hire date)
- *Johnston Blaze Swim Club will cover the cost of required USA Swimming certifications and background check but will not pay coaches for time spent earning or maintaining these certifications
- Current Lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid certification or Safety Training for Swim Coaches Certificate (American Red Cross preferred Others as approved by CE Aquatic Coordinator must convert to ARC within 1 year of hire date) Cost of this certifiaction and time spend on Lifeguard Certification are not covered by employer.
Certifications Obtainable upon Employment
(Complete within 2 weeks of hire and prior to first scheduled shift)

- Trainings required by Community Education
Experience
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Must have high school diploma
- Competitive swimming background preferred
- Knowledge of competitive swimming structure and club operations preferred
- Knowledge of instructing and coaching developmental and competitive swimming preferred
Performance Criteria
Professional
- Ensure safety of all swimmers
- Be aware of any/all medical conditions of all swimmers on team. Create a plan to provide a safe and successful experience for each swimmer.
- Record all accidents/injuries ejections employee absence or discipline and other incidents on appropriate forms.
- Be on deck and prepared to deliver program before swimmers arrive.
- Assure swimmers are supervised during practice or at any swim meet.
- Inspect pool facilities for cleanliness and to ensure the safety of swimmers address issues as able and report any maintenance problems.
- Make sure all equipment used during practices and/or swim meets is in sound condition and are stored properly following the events.
- Monitor Blaze coaching certifications. Ensure that all necessary Blaze coach certifications are current for coaches on-deck or responsible for supervising swimmers.
- Communicate with participants parents coaches and pool staff
- Serve as the most visible leader of the Blaze Swim Club by being present for team activities and available to parents and swimmers before and after events.
- Listen to parents concerns/issues with respect and work towards a win-win outcome communicate with swim team coaches pool manager and Aquatics Coordinator to help resolve issues.
- Respond and handle all on-site complaints in regards to Blaze Swim Club.
- Clarify rules regulations and expectations of swimmers and parents communicated prior to each session.
- Conduct parent meetings before the start of each new season and additionally as needed.
- Maintain timely and accurate communication with Blaze swimmers and families.
- Provide parents with meet entry timelines and expectations.
- Obtain volunteers as needed to assist with the functioning of the club.
- Work in cooperation with the Aquatics Coordinator to develop the club season calendar of events.
- Effectively utilize Hy-Tek/Meet Manager Software and Team Unify to manage team rosters team events and team communication.
- Organize and run swim team practices and meets
- Create schedule to be primarily focused in direct-service to swimmers leading team practices and events.
- Manage schedule to not exceed 30 hours.
- Develop team goals and strategies for a successful swim season.
- Coordinate times for swim practices and swim meets with the Aquatics Coordinator that will not conflict with other school or community education programs.
- Ensure fair practice and swim meet experiences.
- Assign responsibilities to and share practice plans with assistant coach for delivering practices.
- Attend as many practices and meets as possible create a plan and assign responsibility for events unable to attend.
- Develop swim team line-ups and entries being submitted on time and in accordance with appropriate guidelines. Create line-ups for meets that give swimmers opportunities to swim various events throughout the season and line-up with team and individual goals.
- Maintain swim meet records (times etc.).
- Maintain attendance records for practices.
- Program should include:
- developing individual strokes turns starts finishes
- teaching sportsmanship
- fostering team spirit
- modeling appropriate team behavior
- Provide leadership and supervision to assistant coaches
- Oversee and train all assistant coaches to assist swimmers in developing personal swim goals and operation of club.
- Deliver Blaze coaches meetings regularly.
- Coordinate with Aquatics Coordinator to recruit new staff as needed.
- Interview coaching candidates and makes hiring recommendations to the Aquatics Coordinator.
- Administer work schedule for coaching staff utilizing process and framework provided by the Aquatics Coordinator.
- Evaluate coaches at the end of each season.
- Attend all assigned meetings.
- Manage day-to-day operation of the club.
- Operate within the budget set for the club.
- Ensure accurate and timely orders for supplies apparel etc.
- Assist in the creation of team handbook job descriptions and club rules and ensure implementation and adherence to same.
- Strive to find methods and processes to improve the club.
- Perform other such duties and functions as are necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this position.
- Display professional behavior when representing the Blaze Swim Club Johnston Community Education and the Johnston Community School District (practices meets meetings etc.).

- Work location will be assigned as needed.
- Work days/hours may vary depending upon program needs.
- Primary location is Johnston Community School District facilities and program-specific.
- Performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or higher-level leadership.
- Performance evaluation conducted by direct supervisor.
