Position Summary
The Special Education Teacher is a designated learning specialist responsible for the case management and provision of Special Education services to students from kindergarten through post high school. This position may teach in a variety of elementary and/or secondary educational settings which include but are not limited to general education classrooms and Resource Rooms.
Special Education Teachers assist the school district in carrying out the requirements of special education programs as required by State and Federal law through Child Find Evaluation and Identification as well as being responsible for compliance with instruction learning and student accommodation requirements under Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
Essential Functions
- Responsible for planning the students individualized programming by selecting specific activities materials and methods as related to diagnostic findings and recommendations of the evaluation team.
- Schedule students for time in inclusion opportunities and resource classes as required to implement their IEP.
- Assist general education classroom teachers with the selection of appropriate curricula and/or provide guidance on the appropriate accommodations and modifications required to support a students access to the general education curriculum.
- Case-manage and coordinate the IEP process for all students on caseload.
- Confer with parents administrators and other professionals to develop IEPs designed to promote students educational physical and social/emotional development.
- Maintain and provide reasonable and meaningful grading progress monitoring and evaluation data consistent with school and district policy and regularly and effectively communicate such information to students and parents.
- Collaborate with team members and support the development implementation and review of appropriate behavior plans or safety plans.
- Schedule and manage the activities of Instructional Assistants as assigned. Delegate duties and monitor effectiveness providing direction and training as needed.
- Serve as a member of multidisciplinary teams.
- Maintain close and frequent communication with parents guardians concerned agencies and outside professional agencies.
- Regularly communicate with general education teachers in regards to specific needs of students within general education classroom environments. Counsel teachers on effective modifications and ensure that students receive the instructional supports identified on their IEP.
- Serve as an expert resource on the application of Special Education law under IDEA in the classroom and appropriate instructional strategies.
- Plan goals based on grade-level standards that are meaningful and differentiated to meet students individual needs.
- Communicate effectively with parents/guardians students and other staff regarding student progress (behavioral and academic).
- Use observable systems and routines for recording and using student assessment data.
- Maintain student records as required by the District and/or the school.
- Modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities based upon a variety of instructional techniques and technologies.

- Follow all District policies work procedures and reasonable requests by direct and district supervisors and/or outside agencies.
- Maintain the integrity of confidential information relating to students staff and District patrons.
- Confer regularly with immediate supervisor.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

- Analytical and diagnostic skills to assess a students learning needs and translate such needs into an effective instructional plan for the student.
- Knowledge of child and adolescent development and ability to apply that knowledge to the selection and application of curriculum materials and instructional practices.
- Knowledge of second language acquisition.
- Ability to effectively communicate individual student plans and to coach and support other staff and teachers so that they may effectively implement their responsibilities under the plan.
- Ability to effectively communicate with parents students and other staff verbally and in writing.
- Ability to utilize technology to aid instruction assessment and learning.
- Ability to demonstrate professionalism in all situations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Successful completion of a teacher certification program at an accredited college or university.
- Current TSPC Teaching Licensure with appropriate Special Education endorsement (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire).
- Successful teaching experience and/or demonstrated potential to effectively teach in a special education environment.
- Experience working successfully with culturally diverse families and communities or otherwise demonstration of a commitment to strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with a diverse population.
- Demonstrated commitment to collaboration and effectiveness in working within a professional learning community.
- Evidence of continuous professional learning and a commitment to participate in professional growth and self-reflection on professional practice.
- Within 90 days of hire: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in District-adopted deescalation restraint and seclusion methodology as assessed by a certified trainer.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable
- Successful completion of criminal history records check as required by law.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual Spanish-English.
- Strong lens on educational equity and serving the needs of diverse students.
- Understanding of Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).
- Experience supporting student behaviors and understanding of restorative practices and social-emotional learning.
This position is 1.0 FTE.
