Te kaupapa The project

This project will investigate how to control porosity in bio-based materials made from proteins and carbohydrates from NZ secondary resource streams. Bio-based materials produced from industry secondary resource streams such as animal pelts dairy DAF fruit skins and pine bark will be a cornerstone of New Zealands future circular economy. While application-specific properties differ one property that is commonly required in advanced applications of materials is controlled and tailorable porosity for the protection and delivery of an active ingredient. This project contributes to the underlying material science required to achieve such engineered porosity in a future generation of bio-based materials. Some examples of applications for porous bio-based materials include green-house gas mitigation fertilisers pharmaceuticals biopesticides and probiotics. Literature search to determine strategies. Duties include:

    • Review of relevant scientific literature on a shortlist of bioresource that can be sourced from secondary biomass streams - to select a subset of candidates (2-3) for the project.
    • Lab-scale chemical and/or mechanical processing of biomass/biopolymers into reconstructed material formats
    • Use of material manufacture techniques such as freeze-drying super critical solvent drying chemical and/or thermoforming techniques
    • Use of material characterisation techniques to assess material properties principally scanning electron microscopy and microstructural analyses.
    • Data analysis visualisation presentation and report writing

.
