At the Department of Climate Change Energy the Environment & Water (DCCEEW) we are seeking a skilled and strategic Principal Data Engineer to lead the design development and delivery of enterprise-scale data solutions.

About the role

As a Principal Data Engineer you will transform complex data so the insights analysis and science can happen so DCCEEW can make the right strategic decisions drive operational efficiency and continually improve.

You will take full ownership of modern scalable data pipelines and platforms ensuring they are high-performing reliable secure and aligned with enterprise standards. Collaborating closely with key stakeholders you will translate business needs into robust data solutions while embedding best practices in data engineering architecture and governance.

About you

To be successful in this role you will bring a combination of strong technical expertise and interpersonal skills including:

  • Strong software engineering background with expertise in developing and delivering enterprise-grade data solutions
  • Proven expertise in Microsoft Azure data services including Data Factory Synapse Analytics Databricks Data Lake Storage Gen2 and Microsoft Fabric
  • Proficiency in Python SQL (T-SQL) and PySpark with hands-on experience in designing and building secure scalable high-performance data pipelines
  • Practical experience with CI/CD practices using Azure DevOps and familiarity with Git for version control
  • Strong understanding of modern data architectures such as lakehouse design Delta Lake and Parquet file formats
  • Experience with scripting and automation using tools like PowerShell and Jupyter notebooks for data exploration and transformation
  • Sound knowledge of data governance security privacy and compliance requirements in complex or regulated environments
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate complex challenges adapt to change and deliver high-quality outcomes under tight deadlines
  • Outstanding communication skills with the ability to clearly convey technical concepts to a variety of audiences
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships ensuring alignment and buy-in across diverse business and technical groups
  • A collaborative leadership style capable of driving outcomes while engaging others in the process to foster ownership and shared success

Essential requirements

  • Tertiary qualifications and/or demonstrated equivalent industry/professional experience at a senior level with demonstrated commitment to ongoing.
