Obtain research experience on project evaluating the Hawaii State Department of Health Alcohol and Drug Abuse Divisions Hawaii Overdose Initiative through the Mapuna Lab in the Division of Mathematics Natural and Health Sciences at the University of Hawaii-West Oahu.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Provide staff support in the following field of assignment or subject matter area: Culturally safe mental health and substance use prevention and treatment for Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander communities..
  • Support senior associates in the performance of specific work assignments such as program evaluation for overdose prevention treatment and recovery services contracted by the Hawaii state offices including but not limited to the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division at the Department of Health.
  • Assist with data collection database management and data analysis in a multimethod system analysis of Hawaiis overdose prevention treatment and recovery resources using both qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Disseminate findings results etc. through oral and written presentations at meetings in policy briefs academic articles etc.
  • Assist with the preparation of written reports e.g. monthly progress updates annual program evaluations and legislative reports summarizing the results and observations of inspections and make recommendations based on observations and application of standards codes and regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:


  1. Must be a classified degree-seeking graduate student in a Masters or Doctoral program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa pursuing a degree in Public Health Social Work/Social Welfare Psychology Quantitative Health and Clinical Research Hawaiian Studies Pacific Islands Studies or a related field.
  2. Must be In good academic standing and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above.
  3. Maintain 6 credits per semester with the exception of those who have reached 800 (dissertation) or 700F (thesis) (SeeCurrent Students > Graduate Students > Course Loads) possess the necessary qualifications and experience for the position and demonstrate proficiency in English.
  4. Considerable knowledge of both public health theories and research methods and Hawaiian-Pacific culture language and history.
  5. Ability to work remotely using online working tools such as Google Suite Slack Trello Gather and Zoom.
  6. Demonstration of effective written and oral communication skills.
  7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students faculty staff and community groups from various cultural backgrounds.
  8. Detail-oriented responsibly organized consistent efficient and accurate.


Desirable Qualifications:


  1. Advanced knowledge of Native Hawaiian health substance misuse culturally-integrative health interventions and culturally-grounded program evaluation.
  2. Previous experience analyzing data population based survey data interviews and other research data and associated software (e.g. Qualtrics NVivo R STATA SPSS SAS).
  3. Working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws rules regulations and theories and systems associated with Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander substance misuse disparities.
