Job Description

*** To be considered for this position candidate must be serving permanently in the civil service title of Assistant Civil Engineer or be reachable on Assistant Civil Engineer civil service list or be eligible under the 55-a Program. ***

Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) is responsible for the safe efficient and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the Citys streets supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living working and doing business in New York City. The Divisions responsibilities include roadway project planning roadway design technical analysis maintenance of street signs transit development freight mobility and roadway markings. TPMs Design & Construction (D&C) unit has professional engineering oversight for geometric design elements of NYC roadways. We draw on expertise and talent of Civil Engineers Urban Designers Planners Asset Managers Inspectors Administrators Analysts and others to evolve and maintain the curb geometry and street plans for all NYCs 6300 miles of roads create and maintain official pavement marking and concrete island plans and oversee the application and refurbishment of NYCs 250 million linear feet of pavement markings (stripes messages colored surface treatments for bus/bike/plaza etc.).

D&C seeks to hire self-motivated and ambitious candidates to assist in improving safety through review and design of Overhead Sign Structure (OSS) messages along limited access roadways in New York City. Candidates selected to be Assistant Civil Engineers within D&C will respond to requests from other divisions within NYCDOT and NYSDOT to determine if OSS locations and messages meet the requirements of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and meet the needs of the traveling public. The Assistant Civil Engineers will work collaboratively with others in the D&C Unit to evaluate the feasibility of ground-mounted signs as alternatives to OSS design replacement sign panels to comply with the latest Federal standards and site-specific needs and assemble contract plans designs specifications notes proposals and estimates for independent contracts or integration into other suitable contracts.

Preferred Skills:
Preference will be given to candidate who posses a drivers valid in the state of New York. This license must be maintained throughout duration of employment in this position.
Proficiency in AutoCAD GUIDESign AutoTurn and Microsoft Office Suite. A familiarity with AASHTO MUTCD NYC Street Design Manual and NACTO publications.
Excellent writing and oral skills preferred.

Note: Less than 2 yrs. City Service - New Hire Rate: $ 66330 2 or more yrs. City service - Minimum Incumbent Rate: $ 76279 *** To be considered for this position candidates must be serving permanently in the title of Asst. Civil Engineer or be reachable on the open competitive civil service list for Exam Nos. 5015***. This position is eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program agreed to between the City and DC37. Those candidates interested in this position will be asked to work collaboratively to cultivate continued professional development use state of practice technology for plan development and to effectively communicate through verbal and written forms with all stakeholders.

Qualifications :

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or

2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a Masters degree from an accredited college in civil engineering.
