We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Workshop Operations Manager to lead the efficient safe and high-quality execution of all workshop activities with a primary focus on new build and manufacturing projects.
This pivotal role combines hands-on technical leadership with strategic operational oversight ensuring all projects are delivered to the highest standards on time and within scope. Working closely with the Maintenance Superintendent you will coordinate the scheduling of repairs servicing and mobile operations ensuring technicians and resources are effectively allocated to meet delivery targets.
You will also act as the technical authority for heavy vehicle manufacturing and compliance while stepping into the role of engineering and design coordinator as needed. The Tasks Ahead
- The Workshop Operations Manager is responsible for the efficient safe and high-quality delivery of all workshop operations with a primary focus on new build and manufacturing projects.
- They will work closely with the Maintenance Superintendent to schedule repair service and mobile service operations ensuring that technicians and resources are allocated effectively to meet delivery schedules and maintain quality standards.
- The role also acts as the technical authority in heavy vehicle manufacturing and compliance and as the engineering and design coordinator when required.
- This role blends hands-on technical leadership with operational oversight ensuring that the workshop runs to standard deadlines are met and the team maintains discipline pride in work and safety culture.
About You
- Trade qualification in heavy vehicle mechanics fabrication/boilermaking or heavy vehicle body building.
- Minimum 10 years experience in heavy vehicle manufacturing assembly or service operations with at least 5 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Strong knowledge of Australian Design Rules compliance requirements and heavy vehicle fit-for-purpose standards.
- Experience in scheduling resource allocation and workshop workflow management.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings; CAD experience advantageous.
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to instil discipline pride and a safety-first mindset.
- Excellent interpersonal skills for liaising with customers suppliers and internal stakeholders.
- Experience in preparing estimates and quotes for manufacturing or repair works.
Key Requirements
Workshop Operations
- Oversee all manufacturing and fabrication projects ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and fit-for-purpose outcomes.
- Coordinate with the Maintenance Superintendent to schedule and prioritise both manufacturing and service jobs.
- Monitor workflow and adjust resource allocation to meet deadlines and optimise productivity.
- Implement and maintain a strong safety culture leading by example.
- Ensure quality control measures are followed at all stages of production.
Engineering and Design
- Oversee and approve engineering design work whether internal or through external contractors.
- Provide technical input into designs to ensure compliance and manufacturability.
- Review and interpret technical drawings schematics and specifications.
Customer Liaison and Quoting
- Work directly with customers on project scoping technical queries and job progress updates.
- Support the GM in building strong client relationships and fostering repeat business.
- Prepare estimates and quotes for manufacturing and workshop projects in collaboration with the GM.
People Leadership
- Lead mentor and develop the workshop team setting high standards for workmanship and behaviour.
- Enforce discipline and accountability ensuring work is carried out to the required standard and on time.
- Work closely with the GM to ensure team capability aligns with business needs.
- Compliance and Standards
- Ensure all work meets industry compliance requirements (ADR NHVAS workplace safety etc.).
- Maintain accurate records for quality assurance regulatory audits and customer reporting.
