Job Description

Reporting to the Interlibrary Loan and Resource Sharing Supervisor the Borrowing Specialist is responsible for providing high-quality services to the Virginia Tech community. This role is focused on the daily operation of borrowing services ensuring that all interactions with library users and partner institutions are prompt courteous and efficient while maintaining compliance with copyright laws licensing agreements and interlibrary loan best practices.

The Borrowing Specialist performs bibliographic searches to process routine customer requests and resolves complex service problems within established guidelines; and trains and directs the work of wage and student labor to assist in fulfilling such requests. As a Purchase-on-Demand library the Borrowing Specialist recommends titles for purchase when appropriate. The Specialist also provides essential back-office administrative support for borrowing operations.

Required Qualifications

-Interlibrary loan or comparable public service experience in a library setting
-Demonstrated experience to interpret explain and apply library policies to resolve problems
-Demonstrated experience searching bibliographic records using an integrated library system or library services platform a library discovery service or other electronic resources
-Experience using tools such as Microsoft Excel Google Sheets or similar platforms for data collection and reporting and for documenting policies and procedures
-Demonstrated experience training and directing the work of employees

Preferred Qualifications

-Interlibrary loan or comparable public service experience in an academic library
-Experience working with Alma Worldcat Discovery RapidILL and ILLiad
-Experience with an acquisition on demand purchase on demand service or similar service in an academic library
-Experience with Reprints Desk and CCC Get It Now services
-Experience with Adobe or similar software applications used to make adjustments to scanned documents in order to provide a preferred deliverable format

$38000-$39000 dependent on experience and qualification

Hours per week

40 hrs. Monday-Friday 8am-5pm

Additional Information

Must be able to traverse a multi-story library facility and book stack environment.
Must be able to independently frequently and safely move and handle books weighing up to 10 pounds.

Must be able to receive P-card approval and maintain P-card authorization/access.

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
