MS Diagnostic Cytopathology Program
DCYT 5329 Clinical Practicum II
This course provides clinical practice in diagnostic cytology with focus on non-gynecologic and fine needle aspiration cytologic specimens. Students will be involved in the microscopic examination and evaluation of conventional liquid-based cytology cases from various body sites along with ancillary stains cell block preparations. Students will assist with FNA procedures and Rapid-On Site Evaluation of samples. Students will also participate in observation sessions associated with companion diagnostics such as digital image analysis immunohistochemistry immunocytochemistry and molecular diagnostics. Students are assigned to various clinical affiliates by the Programs Education Coordinator/Program Director.
4 credits/ Clinical Practice.
This course provides clinical practice in non-gynecologic cytology and fine needle aspiration screening and observation sessions in companion technologies. Students are assigned to clinical sites by the Education Coordinator/Program Director and report 7.5 hours/ 4 days per week for 390 hours and 3 to 4 hours for a 3-day observation session for a total of 402 clinical hours . Students are required to arrange their own transportation during the clinical rotations.
DCYT 5239 Clinical Practicum I
Clinical site supervisors serve as the primary instructors for the course. Contact information and preferred modes of contact with the clinical site supervisors will be provided to students at the start of the Clinical Practicum.

The goal of the course is to provide students with clinical practice in diagnostic interpretation of non-gynecologic and fine needle aspiration cytologic material and observation of companion diagnostic technique preparation and interpretation in the cytology laboratory setting.
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. Analyze and correlate patient data with visualized cytologic findings along with recognizing the need for additional clinical data.
2. Demonstrate proper use and care of microscopic equipment as well as slide scanning techniques such as proper overlapping.
3. Differentiate between unsatisfactory and satisfactory conventional and liquid based non-gynecologic and fine needle aspiration samples.
4. Evaluate cytologic samples including cell blocks and small tissue biopsies as to the degree of cellular abnormality utilizing all visualized cellular material.
5. Correlate diagnostic interpretation results with previous cytologic material ancillary techniques and histologic findings when applicable.
6. Demonstrate high statistical sensitivity and specificity while examining a minimum of 50 slides per day
7. Write an accurate report utilizing current non-gynecologic and fine needle aspiration terminology.
8. Understand proper procedures for companion diagnostic processing and interpretative guidelines
Students are required to achieve and maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 to remain in good academic standing. Please refer to MS Diagnostic Cytopathology Program manual and SHP Policy 3.1.2 on Satisfactory Academic Progress. Regular attendance at lecture and laboratory sessions are required. The course requirements and evaluation are based upon achievement of the course objectives. The course requirements and their % weight in the determination of the final course grade are as follows:

Students are required to secure their own transportation to and from clinical sites.
Student progress throughout the clinical rotation will be routinely evaluated by the clinical site supervisors and program faculty on a weekly basis. Additionally the students need to complete report (see Canvas for specific details)
1. Clinical Practical Non-Gynecologic and Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology-65%
At the end of the course on two consecutive days student must evaluate a minimum of 50 non-gynecologic/FNA cytology glass slides per day. Students are required to demonstrate a minimum of 85% sensitivity in detecting abnormal cells and a minimum of 70% specificity in diagnosing the degree of abnormality. Clinical site supervisors will grade the two days of testing at the clinical sites and review results with the students at the conclusion of each day. Final determination of the grade will be calculated by the Education Coordinator/ Program Director. The following rubrics and sensitivity and specificity tables are used to determine the scores of the two consecutive days of glass slide testing. Studnets are expected to score 80% or above on the clinical practical exam or receive a grade of F for the practicums. Students are allowed to repeat the clinical practical exam only once.

2. Clinical Practicum Skills Checklist- 10%
Clinical site supervisors will continuously monitor the clinical practice skills of students and evaluate skill competency in four key domains; microscopic skills diagnostic skills correlative skills and report writing. Students are assessed on the items within each domain as follows:
Unacceptable score of 0
Needs Improvement score of 1
Acceptable score of 2
There is a comment section where evaluators can indicate if skills demonstrated are not applicable and a comment section for providing additional information. A median score will be calculated for each the items in the four domains with each domain assigned the following weights:
Microscopic skills- 25%
Diagnostic skills- 50%
Clinical/Cyto-Histo Correlation skills- 10%
Report writing skills- 15%
Instructors have the discretion to adjust scores based on comments from clinical site preceptors.

3. Clinical Practicum and Observation Session Affective Evaluation- 15%
All students completing the clinical practical rotation will be evaluated on their professionalism using the MS Diagnostic Cytopathology Program Affective Evaluation Form. Clinical site preceptors will continuously evaluate students throughout clinical practice and provide a final evaluation of the students professional behavior on 8 key behavioral domains: attendance integrity communication cooperation self-confidence/self-reliance interest/initiative/motivation effectiveness/efficiency/response to work and professional decorum/empathy for patients. Students are assessed on the items within each domain as follows:
Needs Improvement score of 0
Meets Expectations score of 1
Exceeds Expectations score of 2
There is a comment section where evaluators can indicate if behaviors were not observed or applicable. For items in the attendance integrity communication cooperation and professional decorum/empathy for patients domain a median score will be calculated from all the scored items average and multiplied by 0.6.
For the items in the self-confidence/self-reliance interest/initiative/motivation and effectiveness/efficiency/response to work domain a median score will be calculated from all scored items averaged and multiplied by 0.40.
Instructors have the discretion to adjust scores based on comments from clinical site preceptors.

Students will receive feedback from Clinical site supervisors continuously throughout the clinical rotation. Clinical site supervisors will contact the Education Coordinator/ Program Director with any concerns about student progress. Education Coordinator/Program Director will contact students personally by e-mail by telephone and/or via the Canvas Course Management system during clinical practice on a weekly basis.
Students will complete the anonymous SHP course evaluation form available the Moodle course management system at the end of the course. Students completing clinical rotations will also complete a Clinical Site Evaluation form at the end of the clinical experience. Program faculty will encourage students to provide comments and feedback on quality of the course throughout the course. The quality of the course will also be monitored by post graduate employer and graduate surveys conducted by the Commission on Allied Health Education Professions along with passing rates and scores on the American Society of Clinical Pathologists Certification examination in Cytotechnology.

Occasionally circumstances arise which are beyond the students control and which may affect the students ability to perform on a particular examination clinical experience assignment or other grading encounter. SHP programs are supportive of and invested in their students and will help them simultaneously navigate the required program exercises and deal with the exigent circumstances to the best of their ability. However as stated in SHP Academic Policy 3.1.1 Academic Decision and Grade Review it is the responsibility of the student to notify the program or faculty member of the exigent circumstance by email and before the examination or graded exercise begins. Notification by the student after the examination or graded exercise disallows that particular circumstance from being considered as a factor in the students performance or in the determination of the students grade. For a circumstance to be considered by a program it must have been notified of that circumstance by the student before the graded exercise begins and the notification must be by that way there is no question regarding what the student claimed and when that claim was made.
Rutgers University welcomes students with disabilities into all of the Universitys educational order to receive consideration for reasonable accommodations a student with a disability must contact the appropriate disability services office at the campus where you are officially enrolled participate in an intake interview and provide documentation: If the documentation supports your request for reasonable accommodations your campuss disability services office will provide you with a Letter of Accommodations.
