Job Description

Overview

GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB

The Grant Writer will research and write government proposals United Way applications and private foundation requests to fund current Salvation Army operations and create new funding for programs throughout the Northeast Ohio Division footprint.

The Writer will submit timely reports to foundations etc. as required. Additionally he/she will be responsible for gift acknowledgements; will assist with updating data regarding foundations; and government agencies into a master grants calendar and will report monthly attainment to the Associate Director and Director.

The Grant Writer will work closely with the Director Associate Director and other key staff to contribute to the overall fundraising success of the department.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

GOVERNMENT AND PROPOSAL CONTRACTING

  1. Research and identify opportunities for government funding for Corps in the Division.

  1. Identify define and develop government funding sources to support existing and planned program activities as well as coordinate the development writing and submission of grant proposals to third-party public entities.

  1. Responsible for collecting analyzing and reporting data on the performance of program activities that are funded by third-party public sources.

  1. Properly maintain all files records and correspondence to comply with funders short and long term requirements.

FOUNDATIONS AND CORPORATIONS

  1. Research and identify opportunities for private foundation funding throughout the NEOSA Division.

  1. Identify define and develop foundation funding sources to support existing and planned program activities as well as coordinate the development writing and submission of grant proposals to third-party foundations and corporate entities.

  1. Responsible for collecting analyzing and reporting data on the performance of program activities that are funded by third-party foundations and government sources.

  1. Properly maintain all files records correspondence to comply with funders short and long term requirements.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. OTHER DUTIES To assume other responsibilities as directed by the Director of Government and Foundation Relations the Director of Development and/or the General Secretary.

  1. Assist as needed in the development and maintenance of comprehensive program assessments detailing current service programs throughout the NEOSA Division.

  2. Compose program descriptions for each program within the NEOSA Division that present funding opportunities and update as needed.

  1. Assist in ascertaining specific funding needs within the NEOSA Division and track attainment of achieved funding support.

  1. Prepare and maintain an up-to-date grant calendar charting date requirements for all grant submissions compliance needs and reporting deadlines.

  1. Meet with government agency foundation and corporate personnel as needed to cultivate revenue generating relationships.

  1. Keep the Director of Government and Foundation Relation informed of all grant applications proposals and all gifts received.

  1. Meet with NEOSA Divisional Corps Area Commands and administrative personnel as needed to establish and maintain solid working relationships gather pertinent operational information execute needs assessments and to advance the success of the grant management department.

  1. Special duties as assigned related to the cultivation of gifts promotion of The Salvation Army NEOSA Divisions service programs and success of fundraising efforts.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE.

  1. Bachelors Degree
  2. Minimum 5 years fundraising and/or non-profit grant writing experience.
  3. A proven track record of successful grant writing.
  4. Experience in government agency funding is desired.

SPECIAL SKILLS CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS.

  1. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  2. Proficient in researching interpreting and analyzing diverse data and possess the ability to work collaboratively and independently to achieve stated goals.

  3. Ability to relate professionally and effectively with key constituencies (both internally and externally) and to deal with sensitive situations and confidential information.

  4. Follows policies and procedures completes tasks correctly and on time.

  5. Must have an understanding of and an appreciation for the mission of The Salvation Army and support its goals and values.

  6. Proficient in Microsoft Office and familiar with database applications.

  7. Ability to prioritize and plan work activities use time efficiently plan for additional resource needs organize and schedule allowing for potential conflicts with other peoples schedules as well as policy and procedural issues and develops realistic action plans accordingly.

  8. Adapts to changes in the work environment and manages competing demands.
  9. Ensures work responsibilities are covered when absent arrives at meetings and appointments on time.

  10. Ability to respond to management direction maintain a commitment to working extended hours as needed and completes tasks on time or notifies appropriate personnel with an alternate plan.
