Duties and Responsibilities

  • * Conduct architecture and landscape architecture applied research related to ecological urban and architectural designs plans and solutions tohighly complex and technical issues in the context of University of Hawaii Community Design Center (UHCDC) work.
  • * Perform research in architecture and landscape architectural analysis modeling and generation of proof-of-concept designs.
  • * Define manage and implement project goals and objectives in collaboration with Principal Investigator (Pl).
  • * Synthesize existing literature/reports planning documents regulatory requirements precedents and existing site conditions at various scales.
  • * Develop research and engagement summaries masterplan and facility design proposals programs graphics and documentation incollaboration with Pl.
  • * Define and develop research strategies and projects leading/supporting research teams and conducting planned applied design researchprojects.
  • *Work with Pl and private/public partners to apply research outcomes to real world systems.
  • *Participate in and lead technical activities at workshops community group and stakeholder gatherings etc.
  • *Write proofread edit and/or assist in the writing of research and project reports. Support the dissemination of project findings.
  • *Assist the Pl in integrating the UHCDC applied research and project work with the academic mission and curriculum of the School of Architecture.
  • *Directly support activities to enable the collaborative work of team members and to provide mentorship and supervision forundergraduate/graduate students.
  • *Conduct literature policy data plan document research reviews and library/archives searches.
  • * Keep abreast of architecture landscape architectural and community design trends products and systems.
  • Other tasks to support the various activities of the center as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in landscape architecture architecture urban planning or related fields of study and 3 year(s) ofprogressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for urban design and/or landscape architecture research and/or practicinglandscape architecture; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides he required educationknowledge skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles practices and techniques in the area of community design and familiarity with the local social cultural political economic ecological and regulatory context as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standards and evolving concepts principles and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws rules regulations and theories and systems associated with community design and development.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team leaders and members and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and fluency in MS Office software.
  • If applicable for supervisory work demonstrated ability to lead subordinates manage work priorities and projects and manage employeerelations.
  • Proven evidence of completing highly contextual and inventive design and planning projects that demonstrate the ability to apply innovation.
  • Proven ability to maintain high research and professional standards.
  • Proven ability to independently interpret data and spatial design information.
  • Proficiency in urban landscape design research and graphic abilities.
  • Experience developing research analysis and design documents and writing reports.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in discipline-relevant digital software applications including but not limited to Microsoft Office Adobe Creative Cloud (includingIllustrator) GIS CAD/Revit Rhinoceros and Sketchup.
  • Experience with physical model modelmaking (using analog and digital tools).
Desirable Qualifications
  • Ability to communicate effectively with UHCDC leaders UH faculty staff and students external partners the general community and present to avariety of audiences.
  • Advanced degree in landscape architecture and/or additional professional degrees in environmental design or urban design/planning fields.
  • Recognized standing in the field with evidence of professional maturity as evidenced by project experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead design outreach education and advocacy initiatives for example through service to professional organizations orcommunity design work.
  • Evidence of experience and interest in public-interest design.
  • Experience with local social political ecological and urban contexts through community engaged work in the region.
  • Experience on research and projects related to health and justice in the built environment.
  • Ability to advance the architecture and landscape architecture discipline as evidenced for example in peer-recognized designs awards orpublications.
