Job Description

Note: Initial training period will be conducted during the hours of 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday – Friday with overtime as needed. After successful completion of the training the regular hours will be Monday – Friday 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. with overtime as needed.

SUMMARY

The blocking technician operates machines fitted with spindles induction heaters and hot plates. Using a combination of custom tooling heated pitch and other adhesives the technician attaches (blocks) lenses to tools for processing. Once processing is complete the technician detaches the finishing lenses from the tools.

Spherical Blocking Technician I – All of the essential duties and responsibilities listed below would be expected for an employee to perform with guidance and training during the first few years of employment. There will be some positions that will continue to be this level when set ups and adjustments are not made by the employee.

Spherical Blocking Technician II – All of the essential duties and responsibilities listed below would be expected for an employee to perform at a confident proficient level in 2 or more years of experience. This would include setting up and making adjustments with minimal supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Employee will typically receive On-the-Job training in the following areas. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Regular and punctual attendance is required
  • Overtime hours may be required if needed
  • Safety: Hazardous materials Escape Routes Proper Apparel
  • General flow of parts through plant.
  • Quality Policy and other general quality issues.
  • Understanding and use of pertinent work instructions and procedures.
  • Location of parts to be blocked.
  • Proper handling of optics - finished and unfinished.
  • Location identification use and care of blocking tools.
  • Identification and use of blocking mediums.
  • Blocking and de-blocking techniques.
  • Painting lenses for protection of surfaces.
  • Safe handling of hot parts and tooling.
  • Set-up and operation of induction heaters and hot plates.
  • Issuing and scanning parts.
  • Selection and use of appropriate cleaning racks.
  • Identification and routing of parts.
  • Beveling of parts before blocking (when required).
  • Use of solvent degreaser for cleaning parts and tools.
  • Transport parts to subsequent operations.
  • Tooling storage
  • Print traveler for each board of parts

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to understand speak and read English to interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions work instructions and procedure manuals.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add subtract multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers common fractions and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to understand and carry out instructions furnished in written oral or diagram form. Ability to solve common problems associated with the job.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is generally stands at a table and handles lenses and tooling. Some lifting (up to 50 pounds) and walking is required when transporting tools from one area to another. The employee must be able to see up close in order to check quality of work. This position requires attention to detail the ability to follow written and verbal instructions and the capacity to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.

This position is designated as a safety sensitive position because a person working in this position under the influence of including medical or alcohol may constitute a threat to health or safety which includes but is not limited to 1 working with hazardous or flammable materials 2 operating repairing maintaining or monitoring machinery or motor vehicles.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts heated elements hot pitch and occasional fumes or airborne particles. The noise level is moderate. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required.
