Job Description

The Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Iowa Health Care is seeking an Athletic Trainer to provide direct patient care within various community outreach settings. For approximately 6 months of the year this position will support a local professional hockey team including home and away contests practices and travel. For the remaining months of the year this position will support high school club sport and community partner organizations. This position will collaborate and function within a multi-disciplinary athletic health care team to provide services to professional recreational and school affiliated patients.

Responsibilities to include but not limited to:

Evaluation and management of musculoskeletal injuries concussion and other injury/illness common to the physically active population.

Provide practice/competition surveillance injury recognition and evaluation initial first aid treatment injury management and patient education preventive taping and padding.

Provide referral for medical care as deemed necessary establishtreatment or return to participation plans communicate care with health care team patient/participant family coaches and staff.

Establish administrative procedures to provide emergency plans risk management equipment and supply inventoryand documentation of services.

Provide a specialized level of clinical/technical service for care coordination and/or health professions education. Maintain and update equipment and supplies used in providing specialty care or services.

Collaborate with attending provider to apply or remove splints/casts/braces and fit crutches. Provide product education.

Remove sutures and provide appropriate wound care and dressing changes.

Assist physician in procedures as needed including preparing materials for pre- and post-injections and sutures and preparation of patients treatment site.

Communicate detailed medical information and health education to a variety of audiences.

Collaborate with others on the health care team related to clinical/technical specification to assure safe and effective delivery of care.

Follow/apply policies/documentation requirements. Participate in Quality Assurance. Report variances and work to address them.

Knowledge of the relevance of health information and appropriate documentation methods; ability to record medical histories symptoms vital signs medications diagnoses treatment plans procedures tests and medical results in written or electronic format.

Coordinate use of workers compensation insurance with health care entities.

May serve as a preceptor for the University of Iowa Athletic Training Masters degree program.

Required Qualifications

Professional degree in Athletic Training from a CAATE accredited program

1 year of relevant related experience as an Athletic Trainer

Board Certified Athletic Trainer

Iowa Athletic Trainer License upon commencement

CPR/BLS certification

Working knowledge of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desirable Qualifications

Masters degree in athletic training or related field if professional degree was BS or BA

Clinical experience working within the sport of ice hockey

3-5 years of experience as a certified Athletic Trainer
