About the opportunity
The Technical Officer will work primarily in the Crustacean Research Team supporting fishery research and monitoring across a wide range of project types. The position will work closely with researchers technical officers students and the fishing industry. Fishery research involves handling and analysing large volumes of data; therefore computer literacy is required along with a willingness to learn data processing techniques. The appointee will also be expected to perform specific laboratory and field-based sample collection tasks. The Technical Officer will need to comply with all safety protocols to work in laboratories workshops and on-board research and commercial vessels which includes completing all the training required by IMAS.
*This position is continuing contingent funded (CCF). The funding that supports this position has an expected end date of 30 June 2032. For more information on CCF contracts please see the University of Tasmania Staff Agreement youll do:
- Organise and oversee catch sampling data collection.
- Conduct biological sample collection onboard research and commercial vessels.
- Organise annual surveys by coordinating IMAS and external vessels.
- Assist with data compilation and routine data quality control by performing basic screening procedures and visual checks.
- Conduct laboratory work across a wide range of activities and assist with workshop tasks.
What were looking for:
- A bachelors degree in a relevant field such as marine science environmental science or aquaculture.
- Experience and knowledge in marine research including laboratory work and experience working onboard vessels.
- Proficiency in computer programs including word processing and spreadsheets along with the ability to perform basic data handling and familiarity with basic statistics.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to work in a team environment and operate efficiently with limited supervision.
- Ability to be innovative adaptable and flexible in an environment of change and competing priorities.
Salary details
Appointment to this role will be at HEO 5 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $105665 comprising base salary within the range of $80869 to $90312 plus 17% superannuation.
