Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Forensic Science has experienced record growth and is currently in construction of a new state-of-the-art facility in Hanover County. Once completed this Facility will house staff from the Central Laboratory Directors Office Administrative Offices and the Office of the Medical Examiner currently located in Richmond. The transition is anticipated for First Quarter 2026.

The Virginia Department of Forensic Science (DFS) is seeking a highly skilled motivated and detail-oriented Materials Technician to join the agencys Central Laboratory Administration Section located in Richmond VA. This position will provide support to the Central Laboratory and the procurement section to surplus equipment ensuing compliance with the Commonwealth of Virginia processes. This position will assist the Materials Manager with the day-to-day functions of the storeroom to include coordinating storeroom activities fleet management receiving shipping and surplus property disposal. This position is responsible for preparing documents maintaining records receiving deliveries handling mail and resolving issues related to purchasing goods and addition this position may assist with inventory management and vendor communications. Must obtain forklift operator certification within 3 months of hire date.

This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 April 30 regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience maintaining accurate records prioritizing multiple tasks and projects to meet deadlines working independently with minimal supervision and following oral and written instructions
Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact and communicate effectively both orally and in writing with internal and external customers
Ability to assist with storeroom activities inventory management fleet management receiving shipping and surplus property disposal
Ability to compile and provide information in reports as required by management
Ability to handle hazardous materials and controlled substances
Ability to lift up to 75 pounds with or without accommodations
Ability to operate equipment such as forklifts pallet drivers and hand carts with or without accommodations
Possess a valid drivers license

Additional Considerations

Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 Suite to include Word Excel and Outlook
Experience with computer-based inventory management systems
Experience handling hazardous materials and controlled substances
Experience in surplus property and fleet management of state vehicles
Experience in storeroom operations inventory control scheduling and distribution
Experience operating equipment such as forklifts pallet drivers and hand carts

Additionally the statement is to be filed annually by February 1. The selected candidate is required to complete the Statement of Economic Interest training within 60 days of employment and every two years thereafter.
