Job Description

Definition

Under the general direction of the Supervisor - Maintenance the Grounds Person II provides grounds maintenance services and operations at assigned site/s including assisting in preparations for assemblies events and recreational activities; ensures attractive and safe grounds area/s and athletic fields protecting against erosion; performs a variety of special grounds maintenance operations. The incumbents in this classification provide the school community with pleasant school grounds which directly supports student learning and achievement.

Examples of Duties/Essential Job Functions

The following alphabetical list of functions duties and tasks is typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform other closely related or department-specific functions duties and tasks from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Analyzes plans blueprints sketches etc. to determine the efficient installation of new or upgraded grounds improvementprojects.
  • Assists in the application of herbicides and pesticides to control insects and weeds in accordance with establishedprocedures.
  • Attends unit meetingsin-service training and workshops such assafetymeetings to gather information required to perform jobfunctions.
  • Cleans landscaped areas and related items ( drainsfields litter) to prevent flooding and removehazards.
  • Installs small sections of concrete to maintain safe grounds.
  • Maintains job related grounds keeping equipment including push and/or walk-type mowers and tools; makes minor repairs/services as necessary to ensure the availability of equipment in a safe operatingcondition.
  • Operate large gang reel mowers zero turn mowers and other motorized equipment in the maintenance of District landscaped areas.
  • Performs basic grounds maintenance including using riding and push mowers pruning trimming trees and bushes and leaf blowing to maintain a safe attractive environment.
  • Plants a variety of landscaping materials ( trees shrubbery flowers) tokeep the grounds attractive and protect againsterosion.
  • Prepares grounds and athletic fields ( soil courtyards flower beds chalk fieldspaint stripping) toprovide adequate attractive and safe areas for assembliesrecreational activities and/or athleticevents.
  • Prepares routine documents (e.g. work orders materials forms) toprovide written support and/or conveyinformation.
  • Repairs and/or installs irrigation systems and components ( wiring timers switches) to ensure equipment and/or components are in proper workingorder.
  • Requests materials supplies and equipment and/or support personnel to complete assignments in a timelymanner.
  • Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns ( damage vandalism alarms) to take appropriate action or notify appropriate personnel forresolution.
  • Transports a variety of tools equipment supplies etc. toensure the availability of materials required at jobsite.
  • Oversees substitute workers to ensure work is being performed efficiently and safely.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit and the District including various mandatory District trainings.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

RESPONSIBILITY:
Responsibilities include working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; leading guiding and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organizations services.

Employment Standards/Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION REQUIRED:
High School diploma or equivalency.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Two (2) years of full-time paid experience in yards landscaping grounds and gardening maintenance.

LICENSE(S) REQUIRED:

  • Valid current Class C California Drivers License to drive district vehicles.

CERTIFICATIONS AND TESTING REQUIRED:
  • Pass the Districts applicable proficiency exam for the job class with a satisfactory score
  • After offer of employment obtain:
    • Criminal Justice and FBI Fingerprint Clearance
    • Negative TB test result plus periodic post-employment retest as required (currently every four years)
    • Pre-employment physical exam C through Districts provider at Districts expense
    • Enrollment in the Department of Motor Vehicles employer Pull Notice Program and submission of a current DMV driving record printout with n six months of employment

SALARY SCHEDULE:
Classified Salary Range: 25
Work Calendar: 261 Days
Work Hours: 6:00 am - 3:00 pm (8 hours/day)
Work Location:Maintenance & Operations Department - Roving

Examination Process

*PC RULES 5.2.1.2 -5.2.1.2 - In-house employees will have first consideration for the position. If sufficient candidates are not available to complete the three ranks the Personnel Commission will move to include outside candidates.

The examination process will include screening to ensure applications are complete and meet all minimum qualifications. No additional information will be accepted from applicants once the application has been submitted.Only the most qualified applicants who pass the minimum qualifications review will be invited to the examination process.

The examination process will include a competencyassessment (50% weight).Those achieving a passing score on the competency assessment will be invited tothe qualification appraisal interview (50% weight).Those candidates achieving a passing overall score of 70% out of 100% on both assessments will be placed on the Eligibility List and the top three (3) ranks will be forwarded to the hiring authority for final interview and selection.The Eligibility List is valid for one (1) year from the certified date. This Eligibility list will be used to fill future Grounds Person II openings.
