Description


The Assistant Director supports the mission of the Office of Distinguished Fellowships and Graduate Studies and the Dean of International Students by advising students on competitive fellowships and graduate school opportunities coordinating outreach and programming efforts collaborating with faculty and campus partners to cultivate a strong culture of academic excellence and achievement assisting international students and students participating in post-graduate opportunities abroad with application and VISA materials. Working under the direction of the Director of DFGS and the Dean of International Students the Assistant Director provides individual advising and group programming while contributing to administrative and communication operations that support the success and visibility of the office.
Primary Responsibilities:

Student Advising & Engagement
  • Provide individual advising to students and alumni regarding competitive fellowship and elective graduate study opportunities.
  • Assist students in identifying appropriate award opportunities aligned with academic and career goals.
  • Offer guidance on the development of application materials including personal statements research proposals and portfolios.
  • Support students through the application timeline by communicating deadlines coordinating document submission and providing feedback.
  • Conduct interviews for the Fulbright Scholarship.
  • Conduct mock interviews and preparation sessions to enhance student readiness.

International Student Support

  • Provide support for international students seeking postgraduate opportunities
  • Help develop plan and execute events orienting international students to campus and building a welcoming environment for them on campus
  • Provide support for international students on VISA applications and support for students seeking VISA status while participating in postgraduate fellowship opportunities
Outreach & Programming
  • Plan and facilitate informational sessions faculty panels and workshops that introduce students to fellowship and graduate study opportunities.
  • Collaborate with faculty class deans and student organizations to identify and engage high-achieving undergraduates across disciplines.
  • Manage outreach to targeted populations such as to Honors students pre-health and pre-law students and summer research participants as well as groups organized by major and interests.
  • Represent the office at academic fairs student recruitment events and orientation sessions.

Communications & Resource Management

  • Maintain and update content for the office website social media and print materials.
  • Curate and distribute regular newsletters to promote upcoming opportunities deadlines and student successes.
  • Collaborate with College Marketing and Communications to highlight student awardees and program achievements.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of reference materials sample essays and guides housed in the office and online.

Assessment & Reporting

  • Track participation and outcomes for advising and programming using appropriate databases and tools.
  • Collect feedback from fellowship applicants to improve support structures and resources.
  • Prepare activity reports for internal assessment and external recognition.
Professional Development & Collaboration
  • Stay informed about national and international fellowship opportunities through relevant listservs professional organizations and conference participation.
  • Participate in staff trainings and campus committees as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Career Development Study Abroad and Academic Advising to support student long-term planning.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in higher education counseling liberal arts or related field.
  • 13 years of experience working in student advising academic support or career development.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with high-achieving students pursuing competitive academic opportunities.
  • Excellent communication organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with workshop facilitation database management and online communication tools.
  • Commitment to diversity equity and inclusion in student support and programming.

Working Conditions:
This position may require occasional evening or weekend work to accommodate events or student availability. Some travel for professional development or student support may be expected.

Additional information:
This is a full time exempt level position. The College is committed to providing competitive market pay for its employees. The salary range for this position is $59000 - $66 250. The College also offers a competitive benefits package for full-time staff including:
