Compensation Range

$5791.00 - $8323.42 CAD Monthly

The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge qualifications and experience for the the normal course employees will be hired transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary
The Division of Neurology is seeking a qualified and motivated Data Scientist to support quality improvement and operational efficiency through the analysis of health data. This position involves the extraction collation and interpretation of clinical and administrative data from electronic health records and other health information systems. The successful candidate will play a key role in identifying trends related to consultation volume inpatient admissions billing practices and resident workload and will contribute to data-driven decision-making across the division.

Organizational Status

This position reports to the Head of the UBC Division of Neurology and will work under their direction.

The incumbent will collaborate with faculty members residents fellows and administrative staff within Neurology the Department of Medicine (DoM) the Faculty of Medicine (FoM) and university service units such as Digital Solutions. Engagement with external stakeholdersincluding Health Authority administration staff and related agencieswill also be required.

Flexibility in work hours may be necessary to meet operational demands.


Work Performed

  • Retrieve and process clinical and administrative data from multiple clinical/hospital systems.
  • Analyze datasets to assess quality assurance metrics clinical workload and operational efficiencies including collecting data from various formats platforms and sources.
  • Design and implement custom software tools and scripts to automate data extraction as required.
  • Ensure data integrity and consistency throughout the extraction and transformation processes.
  • Develop and maintain dashboards and reports to inform divisional leadership and support strategic planning.
  • Collaborate with physicians administrators and other healthcare professionals to translate data insights into actionable improvements.
  • Work constructively with hospital and government IT and analytics departments to obtain and validate data while navigating complex organizational structures.
  • Propose innovative data-driven strategies for improving efficiency resource allocation and workflow.
  • Participate in the preparation of written and oral presentations that summarize the data analysis results interpret findings and provide conclusions and recommendations


Consequence of Error/Judgement
This role requires a high degree of accuracy integrity and sound judgment. Errors in data extraction analysis or interpretation could lead to misinformed decisions by clinical and administrative leadership potentially affecting patient care delivery resource allocation and the well-being of medical trainees. Inaccurate reporting may also undermine trust with external stakeholders including health authorities and government bodies and compromise the Divisions strategic planning efforts. The incumbent must be able to handle confidential data responsibly and exercise discretion when dealing with sensitive or politically nuanced information.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Data Science Computer Science Statistics Health Informatics or a related field.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven experience with data analysis visualization tools (e.g. Python R Tableau) and working with healthcare datasets.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience working in or with large healthcare systems or government organizations is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • A proactive and solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to balance assertiveness with diplomacy when dealing with administrative systems.
  • Enthusiasm for healthcare innovation and continuous improvement.
