Job Description

Description

Works under clinical supervision of part time Geneticist at Queens Hospital Center and under administrative supervision of the full time Pediatric Director. Provides genetic counseling services and risk assessment for all patients with family personal history or abnormal relevant screening or diagnostic test results to determine genetic risks provide testing options and supportive addition to counseling patients serves as educational resource for other health care provider patient advocate refers to appropriate community and state programs/services.



Responsibilities
  1. Performs administrative functions necessary for specimen processing and program support.
  2. Supervise medical/genetic counseling students from affiliated programs.
  3. Referral source include prenatal cancer pediatric preconception adult newborn screening and other specialties within hospital and in community referral base.
  4. Provide information and support to families at risk for inherited conditions birth defects or genetic conditions.
  5. Perform risk assessment with pedigree analysis and estimating recurrence risk interview patients about pertinent personal and family medical history information.
  6. Prenatal counseling including explanation of screening and diagnostic testing coordinating such testing when necessary follow up and post testing counseling.
  7. Cancer counseling including pre and post counseling coordination of specimen shipment to appropriate facilities.
  8. Assisting newborn screening coordinator with relevant tasks including genetic counseling for families with identified or at risk for genetic conditions.
  9. Entering newborn screening results in patients chart.
  10. Coordinating the pediatric clinic once a week that is run with Pediatric Geneticist.
  11. Participates in teaching programs including presentation for genetic topics to support groups medical students or other affiliated groups.
  12. Provides clinical supervision to genetic counseling students and medical students during their rotations.
  13. When performing all essential functions maintains confidentiality related to medical records and other patient data.
  14. Participates on interdepartmental hospital and departmental committees as appropriate.


Qualifications

-Masters Degree in genetic counseling from an accredited institution.

-Graduates and certification from approved genetic counselor training program.

-Board Eligible or Board Certified from the American Board of Genetic Counseling. If BE then Board Certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling within two years of employment.

-Excellent computer skills including MS Office package.

-Strong communication organization analytical skills required.

-Ability to work in a fast paced clinic independently as well as in a team setting.

-Bilingual preferred but not required (Spanish French Bengali Hindi/Punjabi).
