Description

The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill a Maintenance Specialist position in the Facilities Management Division. The incumbent is responsible for performing general maintenance duties and assists with special projects and other required tasks.

Duties include but are not limited to

  • Performing general building maintenance/carpentry assignments
  • Assigning repairs and maintenance tasks to assistants/helpers
  • Supervising work to ensure standards are met
  • Performing troubleshooting activities as required and inspects operations of assigned area
  • Ability to use powered tools and manual hand tools
  • Utilizing CMMS work order system to complete assigned tasks
  • Ordering supplies and parts to ensure an effective maintenance program and support incoming work orders
  • Performing other related duties as assigned
**Employees who work in this class are considered essential personnel and will be required to work beyond normal work schedules during declared emergencies and major weather events as well as nights weekend holidays and on-call.**

Qualifications Special Certifications and Licenses

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One year of college preferred
  • Three years of experience directly related to assignment
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

PREFERRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Adept knowledge of carpentry skill set
  • Building and General Maintenance experience is preferred
  • Experience with trades to include HVAC Plumbing Electrical and Carpentry


LICENSING CERTIFICATIONS and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • A valid Drivers License with a satisfactory driving record
  • A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Drivers License within 30 days of hire
  • Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Drivers License with a satisfactory driving record


KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
TYPICAL KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: These are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.

Knowledge (some combination of the following):

  • General knowledge of various trades associated with building/plant maintenance and grounds maintenance
  • Specific knowledge of one or multiple trades such as painting carpentry masonry welding tree maintenance traffic control systems or locksmithing
  • Small engine operations and repairs
  • Related safety and OSHA requirements
  • Basic math and arithmetic

Skills (some combination of the following):

  • Operating power tools
  • Communicating with various internal and external departments vendors citizens and the general public
  • Driving City vehicles to and from assigned locations
  • Reading blueprints
  • Good driving
  • Processing the appropriate forms
  • Using equipment such as a two way radio general hand tools air compressor automobile jump start box etc.
  • Oral and written communication
  • Strong customer service

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:

Working conditions may include exposure to travel to other locations within the City of Richmond as well as outside of the City of Richmond; exposure to hazardous physical conditions such as mechanical parts electrical currents vibrations etc.; atmospheric conditions such as fumes odors dusts gases and poor ventilation; inadequate lighting; intense noise; and environmental hazards such as disruptive people imminent danger and a threatening environment.

Physical Requirements and Working Environment:

Due to the nature of work assignments incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple concurrent tasks with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly finger and see; frequently talk and hear; and occasionally balance stoop crouch stand pull grasp and feel. The working conditions may include environmental terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties this classification is considered to be heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
