The mission of New York Edge is to help bridge the opportunity gap among students in underinvested communities by providing programs designed to improve academic performance health and wellness self-confidence and leadership skills for success in life.
SUMMARY:
New York Edge seeks a highly organized detail oriented and responsible individual to fill the role of Dean of Student this full time position you will be responsible for promoting and actively engaging in restorative intervention practices throughout the school addition to the day-to-day needs you will be tasked with periodically planning and leading professional development for staff. This role reports directly to the Community School Director.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Serves as Restorative Justice Coordinator responding to crisis and de-escalating situations as they arise
Attend professional learning on restorative justice and race/equity and coordinates with assistant principal and dean to implement restorative justice practices.
Works closely with the school culture and CRSE teams to expand restorative practices in our school as a way to ensure that all stakeholders feel welcome needed and heard in our school community and to empower students to become leaders within the school community
Establish relationships and work cooperatively as a team member with school staff caregivers children community agencies and colleagues.
Develop and provide professional learning for staff related to social-emotional issues that impact learning and behavior in the classroom among other topics
Prepares correspondence documents and other forms of written communication for internal and external community outreach purposes.
REQUIREMENTS:
Familiarity and experience with student behavior models such as Therapeutic Crisis Interventions for Schools (TCIS) & Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
Experience hosting or facilitating group professional development sessions on topics such as de-escalation techniques
Ability to intervene in crisis situations with verbal de-escalation techniques
Ability or willingness to develop conflict resolution programs including but not limited to restorative justice and peer mediation
A thorough understanding of child development and behavior
Prior experience in school setting and interaction with students parents and school staff
Prior experience mentoring students
Knowledge of or ability to make referrals for students in need of additional services or alternative placements when necessary
Commitment to continuous professional growth (e.g. professional development formal education professional literature)
QUALIFICATIONS:
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in school community work or school community centered activities
Effective communication and interpersonal skills
Bilingual Spanish language preferred
Strong literacy skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues when necessary
Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion
Ability to develop trusting relationships with students families and staff.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and writing with colleagues parents students and the community
