The Opportunity

The Multicultural ECD Outreach Worker position within the Bond To Literacy (BTL) Program focuses on providing Early Childhood Development information resources and referrals to eligible refugee families with children 0-6 years old in their first language. The work of the position will increase the number of new and isolated immigrant and refugee families who will access community ECD services and will also provide workshops information sessions and seminars for the target community to increase awareness of ECD practices and resources within the community.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Recruit and promotes awareness of Early Childhood Development settlement resources related to parenting and other related resources among the isolated refugee families in their first language;
  • Conducts information sessions workshops and seminars on Early Childhood Development and related community ECD services to link families to ECD services;
  • Connects marginalized refugee and vulnerable immigrant communities (hard to reach families) with community support services and programs;
  • Increases the number of new and isolated refugee families who will access community ECD services;
  • Acts as a key worker for families by gathering information relevant to the clients problems needs and risks by interviewing observing behavior meeting with caregivers and service providers and using a variety of inventories checklists and questionnaires. Assesses the information gathered to identify client problems needs and risks;
  • Develops and implements a service plan which may include referrals home visits integration visits group meetings or other within the BTL program guidelines;
  • Collects statistics and other information related to barriers refugee communities are facing in accessing of existing community ECD services to ensure service delivery;
  • Leads and participates in all program/activities when necessary;
  • Encourages independence self-sufficiency and community involvement in participants;
  • Works closely with programs staff and volunteers of the DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society;
  • Refers clients/participants to appropriate community resources and services;
  • Advocates for the needs of immigrant/refugee parents and children 0-6 years old;
  • Records and reports on data and information required to meet contractual obligations within firm deadlines including but not limited to Timely entering and completion of data into ETO system. ;
  • Maintains accurate statistics as assigned by the Manager.

A Qualified Candidate Will Possess:
  • Diploma or a combination of relevant education and training in Social Work Psychology or Child and Youth Work or related field plus a minimum of 2 years experience working with children and families or equivalent experience.
  • Recent 1-2 years professional experience working in the community health and/or social services sector with refugee or immigrant families required; or an equivalent combination of education training and experience;
  • Professional level fluency in oral and written English Dari Pashto Hindi and or Farsi is required;
  • Experience with ETO database is mandatory.
  • Experience with BTL HIPPY program and curriculum is an asset.
  • Passion for working with families with young children required;
  • Knowledge of resources and programs available for families with children 0-12 yrs old;
  • Good communication skills oral and written;
  • Demonstrated Group leadership skills;
  • A valid Class 5 drivers license and access to a reliable fully operational vehicle;
  • Knowledge of the experience and needs of immigrant and refugee families;
  • Working computer literacy skills including MS Office applications Internet and E-mail;
  • Ability to work cooperatively and independently in a team;
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity.
