The Lead Radiation Therapist will work directly with the Director of Radiation Oncology to oversee daily activities in the department. The lead therapist will assist the Director in identifying problems recommending solutions and assisting in the improvement of technical and quality assurance programs. Therapists at this level are expected to have a thorough understanding and proficiency in the procedures performed in the Radiation Oncology departments. The Lead Radiation Therapist has significant responsibility for the efficient operation of the treatment delivery and simulation work area communicating and coordinating daily operations with the staff.
Provide radiation therapy to patients as prescribed by a Radiation Oncologist according to established practices and standards. Duties may include reviewing prescription and diagnosis; acting as liaison with physician and supportive care personnel; preparing equipment such as immobilization treatment and protection devices; and maintaining records reports and files. May assist in dosimetry procedures and tumor localization. Reports to Director of Radiation Oncology.
Education:Associates degree Required; Graduate of a Program in Discipline Required; Bachelors degree Preferred.
Licenses:Must be registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiation Therapy.
Certifications:Basic Life Support (BLS)
Essential Functions
Lead Responsibilities
1. The Lead Radiation Therapist Team is designated as a Super User for Mosaiq. These responsibilities include keeping the FDB database updated monthly trouble shooting problems with the software assisting other staff with issues arising with Mosaiq reporting issues to Elekta that cannot be resolved printing needed reports for monthly QA and assisting in training new employees on the Mosaiq system and adding them to the directory appropriately.
2. Troubleshoot and correct minor machine faults arising from the linear accelerator and simulator and/or notifies service providers to initiate corrective action when needed.
3. Maintain service log for the linear accelerator and simulator.
4. Make sure QA procedures have been performed and documented.
5. Assist the dosimetrist with ordering and measuring output readings for electron cutouts. Assists with diode readings when applicable.
6. Make sure rooms are stocked with appropriate supplies and notify the Director of Radiation Oncology when supplies need ordered.
7. Assumes supervisory role when director is absent and directs necessary matters to appropriate personnel when needed.
7. Provides ongoing instruction to staff therapists regarding changes in practice or new methods of treatment.
8. Assists in keeping departmental policies and procedures up to date.
9. Oversees daily departmental charges.
10. Assist with insurance authorization as necessary.
General Responsibilities
1. Thoroughly reviews prescription diagnosis patient chart and identification.
2. Prepares devices for immobilization treatment and protection.
3. Performs simulation and radiation treatment procedures per instruction of the Radiation Oncologist.
4. Enters correct data into the linac computer system.
5. Positions and delivers radiation treatments according to prescription.
6. Monitors and reassures patient during treatment; reports unusual reactions to the Radiation Oncologist.
7. Maintains records reports and files as required.
8. Follows principles of radiation protection for patient self and others.
9. Enters charges into hospital computer system.
10. Performs and assists with Q.C./P.I. activities and gathering of statistical information.
11. Performs mold room operations.
12. Assists in reception area if needed.
13. Assists with transporting inpatients to and from the department.
14. May be required to perform other assignments as requested by the Director of Oncology Services.
