Position Summary
The Senior Specialist Networks provides expert services in relation to designing implementing managing operating and supporting of the IT network for all of UNSW. This role of this position is primarily focused on delivering new and upgraded network services across a variety of infrastructure projects. The position is part of UNSW IT but will works closely with the Faculties and Divisions to ensure the services are delivered to their requirements operate within their defined metrics and to maximize uptime for the UNSW environment. The position of Senior Specialist Networks reports to the Team Leader and has no direct reports.
Accountabilities:
- Project Involvement: Collaborate with project managers architects and consultants during the planning and design phases of capital works projects. Provide technical input into the design and specification of IT network infrastructure (e.g. Wi-Fi access points switches firewalls).
- Design & Documentation: Develop and review network infrastructure designs drawings and specifications. Ensure compliance with relevant UNSW design standards. Maintain accurate documentation of network design and as-built drawings.
- Implementation Oversight: Oversee staging activities by contractors to ensure adherence to design and quality standards. Conduct audits during construction and commissioning phases. Coordinate testing of new network services.
- Asset & Inventory Management: Maintain accurate records of network assets including procurement deployment and decommissioning. Track warranties service contracts and vendor support agreements.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with internal IT teams facilities management and external vendors to align network delivery with operational needs. Provide technical advice and support to stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
- Network Infrastructure: Operate and maintain network infrastructure including Core Campus and Data Centre environments. Ensure network design and build compliance to IT infrastructure standards. Support network device onboarding operations.
- Network Operations & Maintenance: Install configure and maintain network hardware. Monitor device performance and health proactively addressing issues to minimize downtime. Perform routine network audits software updates and lifecycle management.
- Incident & Problem Management: Respond to network-related incidents and service requests ensuring timely resolution. Troubleshoot and diagnose hardware and software faults coordinating with vendors for repairs or replacements.
- Compliance & Standards: Ensure all network infrastructure complies with organizational security safety and UNSW infrastructure and operational standards. Contribute to the development and maintenance of IT infrastructure standards and guidelines.
- Collaboration & Support: Work closely with critical infrastructure support systems and application teams to support network needs. Provide technical guidance and support for network-related projects and upgrades. Provide expert level services and advice in relation to the implementing management and operation of the IT Managed environment for all of UNSW. Be available for On-Call / After Hours support on a rotating basis typically one week per month as well as weekend and After Hours work as required. Help manage complex risks issues and costs and work with the team to ensure appropriate solutions are in place.
- Assist the Team Leader in optimising the way in which the Network Services team works including practices organisation and resourcing to promote team dynamics and opportunities for continuous improvement.
Key Selection Criteria:
Qualifications:
- Degree in Information Technology Computer Engineering or a related field.
- Industry certifications such as Cisco HPE Aruba Juniper at professional-level or higher are desirable.
Experience:
- Proven experience in designing and implementing IT networks in large-scale capital works or construction projects.
- Proven experience in the development and implementation of policies and procedures network design and other support documentation.
- Proven experience in network operations within enterprise IT environments.
- Hands-on experience with IT network infrastructure in a multi-vendor environment (Cisco HPE Aruba Juniper).
- Proven experience in leading managing or mentoring a team ensuring growth in both breadth and depth of role tasks assigned and role modelling the UNSW behaviours.
Skills:
- Expert understanding of network technologies network design network engineering and network operations.
- Proficiency in using network monitoring tools network management tools and hardware diagnostic utilities.
- Excellent consultation time management influencing and negotiation skills and proven ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes.
- Demonstrated success working effectively and collaboratively on initiatives with a range of people at different levels within an organisation.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
- Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills and proven capacity to exercise initiative flexibility and to be proactive in development of robust solutions to problems.
- Strong understanding of Change Control methods for adding removing or changing IT software hardware and configurations in production and non-production environments.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables with ITIL practices and service management tools.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSWs aims objectives and values in action together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
