WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

This position is part of the Division of Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Ketchikan. The Public Safety Technician I/II performs technical level work in the prevention and detection of violations and the enforcement of laws and addition this position performs semi-skilled work frequently in remote field locations to ensure that mobile facilities and transportation equipment are operational and assists Troopers with surveillance and patrol duties evidence handling and preservation.

THE WORKING CONDITIONS YOU CAN EXPECT:

As a Public Safety Technician I/II in Ketchikan you will have the opportunity to work in varying outdoor environmental conditions as well as some time spent in an office setting. You will be performing semi-skilled work frequently in field locations to ensure that mobile facilities and transportation equipment are operational. You will also help with equipment inventory and perform general clerical duties as needed.


WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

  • Ability to set up camp independently in a wilderness situation

  • Experience using hazardous equipment such as firearms chain saws etc.

  • Experience operating boats more than 24 feet in length

  • Ability to perform vessel and off-road vehicle maintenance

  • Ability to spend long periods of time in close quarters while at sea on vessels between 29-156 feet in length

SPECIAL NOTE
  • Job duties require lifting and carrying of loads weighing up to 70 pounds
    over rough or uneven surfaces.
  • As a condition of employment the Department of Public Safety will require
    a physical examination to determine the ability to meet the physical
    demands of the job.
  • Positions may require work in remote sites where employees may quarter in
    bunkhouses vessels or tents

FLEXIBLY STAFFED - Combined posting (I/II)

This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the 1 or 2 level depending on the applicants training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at level 1 promotion to level 2 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.

BACKGROUND CHECK
This position requires the incumbent to submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check. Due to the sensitive nature of this position and required access to APSIN an applicant with criminal convictions will not move forward in the selection process.

FIREARMS

This position requires the use or possession of a firearm or accordance with the federal Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 1997 (PL 104-208) if you have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence you may not hold this position.

A misdemeanor crime of domestic violence is an offense that is (1) a misdemeanor under Federal or state law; and (2) has as an element the use or attempted use of physical force or the threatened use of a deadly weapon committed by a current or former spouse parent or guardian of the victim by a person with whom the victim shares a child in common by a person who is cohabiting with or has cohabited with the victim as a spouse parent or guardian or by a person similarly situated to a spouse parent or guardian of the victim.

CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENT
The successful candidate will be required to read understand and agree to via signature an agreement of confidentiality concerning the work commonly encountered within the Department of Public Safety to qualify for this position.
